Welcome from the Chairs

I am pleased to welcome you to the 1st International Electronic Conference on Materials (ECM).

This first edition will cover “Functional Materials and Interfaces”, a field which is currently a high priority among scholars. In addition a polymers has been added to the conference topics. The conference will comprise the following sections:

Functional Materials and Interfaces in Food (Section A)
Functional Materials and Interfaces for Energy and Sustainable Development (Section B)
Functional Materials and Interfaces for Biomedical Applications (Section C)
Polymers (collected papers from the ECP; Section D)

All participants will have the chance to exchange their knowledge and latest research with other experts from the community, bringing a rich contribution to this important field. Researchers from both theoretical and applied fields will convene to discuss their latest investigations.

Maryam Tabrizian is professor at the Biomedical Engineering Department and Faculty of Dentistry, and FRSQ-Chercheure nationale awardees. She became Guggenheim Fellow in Biomedical Sciences (2010) and Fellow of the Biomaterials Science & Engineering (FBSE) in 2011, for her contribution to the field of Biomedical Engineering and Biomedical Sciences. She received her PhD degree in Physical Sciences, with a multidisciplinary background including physics, chemistry and biology, from Université Pierre et Marie Curie-École Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie de Paris in 1990. She founded and was the director of the Centre for Biorecognition and Biosensors (CBB) for 10 years from 2001. She has an established expertise in design of biointerfaces, to promote cell-substrate or protein-substrate interactions for biosensing, and is internationally known for her work on functional and bioactive biointerfaces. Her research focus is on the development of engineered surfaces through physical, chemical and biological modifications, as well as via the use of advanced micro/nanofabrication technologies to create biocompatible and biofunctional materials for application in nanomedicine and regenerative medicine She is the author of more than 160 peer-reviewed papers in her field, over 75 invited lectures, many book chapters, patents, and 270 conference communications. She is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Materials, an Associate Editor of the Journal of Biological Engineering (JBI), and the International Journal of Biomaterials Research and Engineering (IJBRE).

I am pleased to announce the 1st International Electronic Conference on Materials, chaired by Prof. Dr. Maryam Tabrizian from McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

The conference will comprise of the following sections:

For the 1st International Electronic Conference on Materials (ECM), we invite scholars from all over the world to present their current novel ideas and latest research on fundamental aspects of materials or concerning their application. Late in the 20th century, we witnessed profound changes in the field of materials.

The advent of nanomaterials and new materials processing techniques have provided us with opportunities to push the frontiers of materials sciences and engineering beyond our imagination. This is precisely what we aim to capture and cover during this special event.

We are looking for experts and scholars who would like to share their knowledge, expertise and the most recent progress by joining this conference which is, itself, a novel way of exchanging ideas with our community.

The conference will be completely free of charge—both to attend, and for scholars to upload and present their latest work on the conference platform. There will further be a possibility to submit selected papers to the journal Materials (ISSN 1996-1944; Impact Factor: 2.247 (2012); 5-Year: 2.338 (2012); www.mdpi.com/journal/materials).

Instructions for Authors

Submission
Submissions should be done by the authors online by registering with www.sciforum.net, and using the "New Submission" function once logged into system.

Scholars interested in participating with the conference can submit their abstract (about 200-250 words covering the areas of manuscripts for the proceedings issue) online on this website until 15 April 2014.
The Conference Committee will pre-evaluate, based on the submitted abstract, whether a contribution from the authors of the abstract will be welcome for the 1st International Electronic Conference on Materials. All authors will be notified by 22 April 2014 about the acceptance of their abstract.
If the abstract is accepted for this conference, the author is asked to submit the manuscript, optionally along with a PowerPoint and/or video presentation of his/her paper (only PDF), until the submission deadline of 15 May 2014.
The conference proceedings papers and presentations will be available on sciforum.net/conference/ecm-1/page/call for discussion during the time of the conference 26 May to 10 June 2014.
The Open Access Journal Materials will publish Special Issue of the conference and accepted papers will be published in the proceedings of the conference itself. After the conference, the Conference Committee will select manuscripts that may be included for publication in the Special Issue of the journal Materials (the submission to the journal is independent from the conference proceedings and will follow the usual process of the journal, including peer-review, APC...).

Presentation Slides
Authors are encouraged to prepare a presentation in PowerPoint or similar software, to be displayed online along with the Manuscript. Slides, if available, will be displayed directly in the website using Sciforum.net's proprietary slides viewer. Slides can be prepared in exactly the same way as for any traditional conference where research results can be presented. Slides should be converted to the PDF format before submission so that our process can easily and automatically convert them for online displaying.

Video Presentations
Besides their active participation within the forum, authors are also encouraged to submit video presentations. Manuscript Preparation

Paper Format: A4 paper format, the printing area is 17.5 cm x 26.2 cm. The margins should be 1.75 cm on each side of the paper (top, bottom, left, and right sides).
Paper Length: The conference proceedings paper should not be longer than 6 pages. The conference manuscript should be as concise as possible.
Formatting / Style: The paper style of the Journal Materials should be followed. You may download the template file to prepare your paper (see above). The full titles and the cited papers must be given. Reference numbers should be placed in square brackets [ ], and placed before the punctuation; for example [4] or [1-3], and all the references should be listed separately and as the last section at the end of the manuscript.
Authors List and Affiliation Format: Authors' full first and last names must be given. Abbreviated middle name can be added. For papers written by various contributors a corresponding author must be designated. The PubMed/MEDLINE format is used for affiliations: complete street address information including city, zip code, state/province, country, and email address should be added. All authors who contributed significantly to the manuscript (including writing a section) should be listed on the first page of the manuscript, below the title of the article. Other parties, who provided only minor contributions, should be listed under Acknowledgments only. A minor contribution might be a discussion with the author, reading through the draft of the manuscript, or performing English corrections.
Figures, Schemes and Tables: Authors are encouraged to prepare figures and schemes in color. Full color graphics will be published free of charge. Figure and schemes must be numbered (Figure 1, Scheme I, Figure 2, Scheme II, etc.) and a explanatory title must be added. Tables should be inserted into the main text, and numbers and titles for all tables supplied. All table columns should have an explanatory heading. Please supply legends for all figures, schemes and tables. The legends should be prepared as a separate paragraph of the main text and placed in the main text before a table, a figure or a scheme.

We present a concept of hybrid photo-responsive device based on the combination of ultrathin SiNW with quantum dots (QDs). High quality SiNW arrays have been fabricated using a novel top-down process. The SiNW arrays were able to detect light from the UV up to the visible range with good sensitivity, fast response and ultrahigh photo responsivity (R~ 10⁴ A/W) at room temperature. The SiNW arrays have good stabilities over long term measurement as well as a range of experimental conditions (e.g. temperature 273 – 343 K) and even after strong UV radiation exposure (up to 585 J.cm^-2). The SiNW arrays were coated with cadmium telluride (CdTe) QDs, and the hybrid QD sensitized devices displayed a significant improvement of the photocurrent measured under UV light while preserving their performance under visible light illumination. The sensitivity over a broad illumination range, the stability and high photoresponse of the new hydrid nanostructures is very promising towards the development of novel optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices.

Polyesters play a very important part in the development of (bio)degradable materials, due to the hydrolizable ester-groups. However, it usually requires stringent conditions and removal of condensates in order to reach high molecular weights in classical polyester step-growth polymerizations. This is in contrast with free radical polymerization, where high molecular weights are reached within seconds without the need for stringent conditions, drastically lowering the cost. Combining the simple procedures for free radical polymerization with the hydrolizability of polyesters has long been a focus in research. With the introduction of radical ring-opening polymerization by Bailey et al. In 1979^[1] it became feasible to incorporate ester-groups into polymer backbone by copolymerizing cyclic ketene acetals (CKAs). This method, however, did not immediately generate broad interest probably owing to the relatively complicated reaction mechanism and tedious synthesis procedures for CKAs. However, since the early 2000’s more research has been performed, mainly on the synthesis of copolymers of CKAs and vinyl monomers.^[2] The development of controlled radical polymerizations also proved to be an accelerator for RROP research. In this contribution, the synthesis of degradable linear and four-arm star copolymers of 5,6-benzo-2-methylene-1,3-dioxepane and methyl methacrylate via RAFT polymerization is presented.^[3] To determine exact copolymer composition, the reactivity ratios of both monomers have been determined and are thoroughly discussed. ^[1] W. Cellulose, as a naturally abundant biopolymer, can be easily functionalized with various organic groups for desired purposes like applications as a biodegradable support for heterogeneous catalysis, composites matrixes and immobilization processes. Metal nanocomposites are one of the best catalysts for organic reaction beacause of their simple recoverable features. They simply can be recovered from reaction pot. A possible method simple separation and recycling of the catalysts is immobilizing catalytically active species in the surface of magnetic metal nanoparticles which can be separated from the reaction system by applying an appropriate magnetic field. In this study, we have prepared a biopolymer-based bimetallic nanocomposite via in situ synthesis of maghemite (gamma-Fe2O3) and Cu on cellulose biopolymer. It has been proven that this catalyst shows very good activities in organic synthesis. In general this nanocomposite catalyst is recoverable, green, easy separable, environmentally friendly and in the chemical reaction as a very good strategy for the synthesis of medicinal and pharmaceutical compounds compared to the traditional method.

B. Functional Materials and Interfaces for Energy and Sustainable Development

This section is chaired by:
Dr. Reza Montazami, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Iowa State University, USA

The development of new materials and surfaces are vital for meeting future energy needs. At the same time sustainable development will emphasize research and development that propose solutions for meeting the needs of today without compromising the needs of future generations. Papers for this topic are expected to cover the increasing role of (nano)materials in sustainable technologies for energy conversion, storage, and savings. Principal areas of interest are: solar cells, batteries and supercapacitors, fuel cells, thermoelectrics, superconductors, more efficient lighting, and hydrogen technologies. Talks and discussion will also include issues considering how to improve the standard of living by protecting human health, conserving the environment, and using resources efficiently.
