Leslie Petrik (PhD), Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at UWC has independently developed the Environmental and Nano Science (ENS) group, Department of Chemistry, University of the Western Cape (UWC). The ENS group is involved in post graduate research in nanoscience and nanotechnology, environmental remediation. Over the 6 year period that the ENS group has existed under Prof Leslie Petrik’s leadership, more than 60 students (Hons, MSc, PhD, NDT, MTech) have graduated from ENS programmes. The focus of Environmental research of the ENS group relates to the remediation of coal based energy generation and mining activities, with a strong focus on water purification and waste reuse. Fly ash and its disposal and sustainability of fly ash as salt sink have been extensively investigated. Studies into conversion of fly ash to geopolymers and carbon capture in brine ash systems are ongoing. Low-cost zeolites are being made from fly ash, a waste product from power stations, and are used to treat gaseous emissions, produce biodiesel, stabilize brines, clear toxic elements from waste streams and remove almost all traces of heavy metals such as lead and arsenic.
