Prof. Miguel Rubi

Prof. J. Miguel Rubi is a professor of condensed matter physics in the Department of Fundamental Physics at the University of Barcelona. He graduated in physics from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and obtained a PhD in physics summa cum laude. He was a postdoc of Professor Peter Mazur at the University of Leiden, working on nonequilibrium fluctuation theories. He has been the Director of the Departament and Chairman of the Physics Program of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, and he is a Spanish Representative for the EU Programs. Since 1996, he has been the Director of the Sitges Conference on Statistical Physics. In 2003, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation awarded him the von Humboldt Prize for his contributions to the theory of stochastic processes, and in 2003, the University of Trondheim awarded him the Onsager Medal for his contributions to nonequilibrium thermodynamics. He was appointed CAS Fellow 2007/2008 by the Centre for Advanced Study at the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters. In 2008, he was awarded the prestigious Research Intensification Award by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, and he currently holds the ICREA Academia Prize (2010), awarded by the Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats. He was appointed Leverhulme Professor at Imperial College, London in 2013–14. In 2016, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology NTNU awarded him the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa.
