We are delighted to announce the 1st International Conference on Advanced Remote Sensing – Shaping Sustainable Global Landscapes (ICARS 2025), to be held in Barcelona, Spain, from March 26–28, 2025.
Hosted by leading experts and supported by the global remote sensing community, ICARS 2025 will offer a comprehensive platform for exploring how advanced remote sensing is revolutionizing our understanding and management of global landscapes and sustainability.
The conference will focus on how advanced remote sensing technologies are transforming our approach to global challenges. Over three days, we will explore innovations in Earth and environmental sciences, engineering advancements, and practical applications in biological and agricultural fields.
Our sessions will cover the latest developments in sensor technologies, data acquisition, and analysis methods, as well as their impact on climate change, environmental management, and urban planning. We will also discuss how remote sensing is enhancing our understanding of ecosystems, agriculture, and infrastructure.
The Summit “Space Agenda for Tomorrow” will bring together international organizations, scientists, space agencies, and industry representatives from the Remote Sensing community with the aim to debate prominent points at the top of the agenda for the sector and identify key global challenges of tomorrow consistent with sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals. With an eye on the present and walking the path to 2030, the Summit will cover critical issues such as climate change, landscape protection and infrastructure assessment, food security, biodiversity, sustainable ocean economy, pollution, and natural hazards.
We invite you to participate in this dynamic, interdisciplinary forum by submitting abstracts for posters or short talks related to these themes. ICARS 2025 promises a stimulating environment where you can present your research, engage in insightful discussions, and connect with fellow experts.

Prof. Tosti is a registered Chartered Engineer, a Professor of Civil Engineering at the School of Computing and Engineering, University of West London (UWL), London, U.K., and the Director of “The Faringdon Research Centre for Non-Destructive Testing and Remote Sensing” at UWL. His research interests include the development of new algorithms, methodologies, and models for geoscience applications and the non-destructive and remote sensing assessment of civil and green infrastructure, and cultural heritage. He has authored/co-authored over 210 research publication records and delivered numerous keynotes and invited lectures. Prof. Tosti was a recipient of the ECSs Award by the European Geosciences Union (EGU) in 2017 and several Best Paper Awards at international conferences, including the TSP 2020, IEEE AGERS 2021 and GIRST 2023. He was the General Co-Chair of the 3rd and 2nd Int. Workshop on Signal Processing Techniques for GPR Applications (SPT4GPRA) in 2022 and 2020, respectively, and he has led technical sessions in 50+ international conferences. He is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of NDT (MDPI), and an Associate Editor of various international peer-reviewed journals.

Andrea Benedetto is a Full Professor in Civil Engineering at the University of Roma Tre, Italy. He has developed relevant research in the field of planning, design, safety sustainability and development of transport infrastructure. He is the author of pioneering studies on NDT and remote sensing applied to infrastructure monitoring and maintenance, which are published and cited internationally. He has coordinated numerous international research projects and served as Editor, Associate Editor and Reviewer of the most important and prestigious international journals. He played also prominent institutional roles as international consultant for EU research programmes, national expert supporting ministries and director of the Department of Engineering at University of Roma Tre.

Dr. Luis A. Ruiz is a professor of remote sensing and digital image processing and co-director of the GeoEnvironmental Cartography and Remote Sensing group (http://cgat.webs.upv.es/) at Polytechnic University of Valencia. He has been visiting lecturer at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences and a visiting researcher at LARSE (OSU), RSGAL (UW), USFS Missoula Fire Sciences and Pacific Wildland Fire Sciences labs. From 2013 to 2023 was editor in chief of the Spanish Journal of Remote Sensing, and since 2022 president of the Spanish Association of Remote Sensing. His research interests are focused on forest structure and fuel characterization using LiDAR, multispectral satellite and aerial imagery; developing object-based image analysis methods for LULC change detection and geodatabase updating; and the analysis of spatio-temporal metrics from LULC maps for urban growth characterization, developing new data processing tools for application in wildfires, fuels, forestry, and agriculture.

Cartographic and Land Engineering Department, Higher Polytechnic School of Avila, University of Salamanca, Avila, Spain - Website
Received a B.Sc. degree in Surveying Engineering and a M.Sc. degree in Geodesy and Cartography Engineering from Salamanca University, Spain, in 1999 and 2001, respectively. He was a Research Assistant at INRIA, Grenoble, France, in the Institute of Computer Vision and Robotics, where he also performed his Ph.D. research on 3D reconstruction from a single view, graduating in 2005. He has authored over 370 research articles in international journals and conference proceedings. Co-inventor of 11 patents and 32 intellectual properties (software). Based on his PhD results, he has received 9 international awards from the International Societies of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS/ASPRS). In 2005, he founded the research group TIDOP (https://tidop.usal.es) (Geotechnologies for the 3D digitization and modelling of complex objects) at the University of Salamanca. He is Full Professor and Head of the Geotechnologies Master and PhD Program at the University of Salamanca, co-founder and CEO of the start-up ITOS3D (Image TO Smart 3D). In 2015 the Royal Academy of Engineering recognised his efforts and work in the field of engineering and in particular in the democratization of photogrammetry. In 2020, the ISPRS recognized his special, personal and meritorious contributions in the field of photogrammetry, being the second Spanish to get this award from its origin in 1996.

Prof. Dr. Ho obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Delaware, USA. His expertise is in environmental telemetry, ocean physics, ocean climate change, and geographic information systems. Professor Ho's research interests are South China Sea internal waves, ocean climate change, ocean thermal structure, and ocean geographic information systems.

I received my B.Sc., M.Sc. in radio physics (radio wave propagation and antenna) and a PhD in space physics from the School of Electronic Information at Wuhan University in 1995, 1997, and 2001, respectively. I also completed an additional M.Eng. and a three-year post-doctoral fellowship in electrical and computer engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) in 2004 and 2007, respectively. From 2008 to 2010, I was a Design Engineer with Rutter Technologies, St. John's, NL, Canada. Since 2010, I have been with the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Memorial University, where I became a Full Professor in 2019 and the department Deputy Head during 2020-2023. I have authored over 260 research papers. My past and present research interests include the mapping of oceanic surface parameters and targets via high-frequency ground wave radar, X-band marine radar, global navigation satellite systems, and synthetic aperture radar, digital image processing and applied electromagnetics. I was a Member and the Co-Chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Evaluation Group for Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Discovery Grants, from 2018 to 2021. I was a recipient of a Post-Doctoral Fellowship from the Memorial University of Newfoundland, the Discovery Accelerator Supplements Award from NSERC in 2017, and IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society 2019 Letters Prize Paper Award as well as some other teaching and research awards.

Ali Khenchaf received the M.S. degree in statistical data processing from the University of Rennes I, Rennes, France, in 1989 and the Ph.D. degree in electronic systems and computer networks from the University of Nantes, Nantes, France, in 1992. From 1989 to 1993, he was a Researcher with the IRCCyN (UMR CNRS 6597) Laboratory, Nantes, and was an Assistant Professor from 1993 to 2001. Since September 2001, he has been with ENSTA Bretagne (Ex. ENSIETA), Brest, France, where he is currently a Full Professor and, from 2001 to 2011, Head of the E3I2 Laboratory (EA 3876). Since 2012, he has been with the Lab-STICC, UMR CNRS6285, Brest, where he was, from 2012 to 2020, head of PIM team (propagation and multi-scale interaction), and since January 2021 he has been head of SyPH Center (Photonic and Microwave Systems) which brings together two teams. He joined, in January 2012, the laboratory Lab-Sticc UMR CNRS 6285, where he is co-responsible of "Propagation and Interaction Multi-scales" team. His research interests include radar applications, radar wave scattering, microwave remote sensing, electromagnetic wave propagation, scattering in random media, monostatic and bistatic scattering of electromagnetic waves, target Radar Cross Section, sea clutter, Radar Imagery, target parameter estimation and GNSS applications. He has edited or co-edited two books and authored or co-authored over 390 scientific articles. He assumed responsibility of more than 55 scientific projects contracted in partnership with industry and other organizations. He also supervised over 46 students ‘PhD. thesis. In addition, Pr. Dr. Khenchaf has been a member of the Editorial Board of 4 scientific journals. He is an Expert with several agencies and organizations in France and abroad.

Dr. Georgios Mallinis (1976) is a Professor in the School of Rural and Surveying Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki-AUTh, Greece. His research is focused on the field of Remote Sensing and GIS for mapping and monitoring terrestrial ecosystems, biodiversity and disaster management. His work has been published in peer-reviews journals, books, and international conferences. He has published more than 61 articles indexed in the ISI Web of Science. He has coordinated and participated in a significant number of EU and nationally funded research projects (>41). He currently serves as the Section Editor-in-Chief of Forests (Natural Hazards and Risk Management Section) and as an Editor of the Journal of Environmental Management.

Professor Javier Marcello received his M.S. degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), Barcelona, Spain, in 1993, and his Ph.D. from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), Spain, in 2006. Between 1992 and 2000, he worked at the Spanish Aerospace Defense Administration (Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial), where he served as Head Engineer at the Canary Space Center, overseeing various programs such as Cospas-Sarsat, TT&C, MINISAT, and CREPAD. In January 1994, he joined the Department of Signal and Communications at ULPGC. Since then, he has taught primarily in the areas of satellite and radio communications at the Telecommunication School. His research at the Institute of Oceanography and Global Change (ULPGC) focuses on multisensor and multitemporal remote sensing image processing using satellites and drones, with a particular emphasis on image segmentation, classification, fusion, and the generation of oceanographic and land products. Regarding scientific production in remote sensing, he has published more than 40 articles in high-impact indexed journals and more than 100 conference papers.
Yuji Murayama is Professor Emeritus, Adjunct Researcher at the University of Tsukuba, Japan. He has served as Representative Director & Vice-President of Tokyo Geographical Society (2023-present), Vice-President of Asian Geographical Association (2019-present), President (2018-20), Chairperson (2016-18) and Director (2010-14) of the Association of Japanese Geographers, Member of Science Council of Japan (2005-2020), Director of Tokyo Geographical Society (2011-17), IGU Steering Committee Member of Transport Geography Commission (2008-16) and Urban Commission (2000-08), and President of GIS Association of Japan (2006-08). He was awarded IGU Lauréat d’Honneur in 2022.

Filomena Romano received the M.S. degree in physics from the University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy, in 1990. In 1992, she joined the Institute of Methodologies for Environmental Analysis, Tito Scalo, Italy, where she got experience on experimental and theoretical studies in atmospheric remote sensing. She collaborated in studies concerning retrieval of atmospheric aerosol from solar spectra at ground level. She has currently specialized in satellite data handling for meteorological and climatological studies. Forest Biometrics and Remote Sensing Lab (Silva Lab), School of Forest, Fisheriers and Geomatics Science, University of Florida, FL, USA
Carlos Alberto Silva is an Assistant Professor of Quantitative Forest Science in the School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences (FFGS) at the University of Florida (UF) where he directs the Forest Biometrics and Remote Sensing Lab (Silva Lab). He is interested in understanding how forest ecosystems changes over time due to natural and anthropogenic disturbances and their impact on the carbon cycle. His core research consists of developing statistical frameworks and cutting-edge open-source tools for remote sensing data processing and forest resources monitoring. He is particularly interested in using lidar (light detection and ranging) data combined with multi- and hyperspectral satellite data and advanced statistical methods to address ecological questions related to forest ecosystem structure, function, and composition dynamics at a variety of spatial scales.

ICARS 2025 will accept abstracts only. The accepted abstracts will be available online on Sciforum.net during and after the conference. Moreover, participants will have the opportunity to contribute a full manuscript to a Topics related to the conference in the open-access journal Remote Sensing and to submit a full conference paper (approximately 3-6 pages) to Engineering Proceedings.
The conference will be held fully in person; it is not possible to participate online. Please note that abstract submission and conference registration are two separate processes. Please use your institutional email address for both processes.
To present your research at the event
- Create an account on Sciforum if you do not have one, then click on ‘New Submission’ in the upper-right corner of the window; or, click on ‘Submit Abstract’ at the top of this webpage.
- Choose a session that is best suited for your research.
- Submit an abstract in English—the word limits are a minimum of 150 words and a maximum of 300 words.
- The deadline to submit your abstract is 24 November 2024. You will be notified about its acceptance by 23 December 2024.
- Upon submission, you can select if you wish to be considered for oral or poster presentation (or both). Following assessment by the Chairs and Scientific Committee, you will be notified by 23 December 2024 whether your contribution has been accepted for oral or poster presentation.
- Please note that, in order to finalize the scientific program in due time, at least one registration by any of the authors, denoted as Covering Author, is required to cover the presentation and publication of any accepted abstract. Covering Author registration deadline is 9 February 2025. Your abstract will be withdrawn if your registration is not complete by this date.
Oral presentations
Invited talks will be 30 minutes long, including questions (25 minutes oral presentation + 5 minutes Q&A). Short talks will be 15 minutes long, including questions (10 minutes oral presentation + 5 minutes Q&A). Please ensure that your slides are formatted in widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio.
Poster presentations
Each presenter will be provided with a vertical poster board. Maximum poster size is limited to A0: 84 x 120 cm / 33 x 47 in (width x height) in the vertical orientation (portrait). Please print your poster prior to the conference. A plan for the poster session will be circulated later.
Publication Opportunities
- All accepted abstracts will be available online in Open Access form on Sciforum.net during and after the conference.
- Additionally, we are pleased to offer further publication opportunities. Authors of accepted abstracts will have the option to submit a full conference paper (approximately 3-6 pages) to Engineering Proceedings.
- Furthermore, there will be an opportunity to submit a full manuscript to a Topics of the conference, with a discount on the publication fee.
Proceeding Papers
We welcome you to submit a proceeding paper to Engineering Proceedings journal after the conference. Publication of the proceedings will be free of charge and the submission deadline is 31 May 2025.
Authors are asked to disclose that it is a proceeding paper of the ICARS 2025 conference abstract in their cover letter. Please read the requirements outlined in the Instructions for Authors on the journal’s website and ensure that your submission adheres to these guidelines.

Registration
The conference will be held fully in person; it is not possible to participate online. The registration fee includes attendance at all conference sessions, morning/afternoon coffee breaks, lunches, a conference bag, and a program book. Participation in the conference is considered final only once the registration fees have been paid. The number of participants is limited: once the number of paid registrations reaches the maximum number of participants, unpaid registrations will be canceled.
When registering, please provide us with your institutional email address. This will accelerate the registration process.

Please note that abstract submission and conference registration are two separate processes. During registration, please provide us with the same email address you used to submit your abstract(s). Otherwise, leave us a comment in the registration form, providing the email address used during the submission process. In addition, please use your institutional email address for both processes. If you are registering several people under the same registration order, please do not use the same email address for each person but their individual institutional email addresses. If you are affiliated with a university in a low- or middle-income country, you are automatically eligible for a price reduction. However, please note that the reduced price will only be added to your registration when it is processed. MDPI Conference Admissions Policy
- All registered conference delegates are asked to always wear their badges throughout the conference.
- Conference sessions, the catering area, and the poster area are solely restricted to badge holders. Any person attending these areas without a badge will be asked to leave the premises.
- Badge holders must not allow their badges to be worn by anyone else. Any failure to do so is likely to lead to the badge holder and the person wearing the badge being removed from the premises.
- Press badges are restricted to publishers, editors, journalists, broadcasters, and web bloggers associated with the conference subject area. Members of the press may be asked to produce accreditation in the form of a photocopy of a recognized press or media card, a business card, a letter from the editor, or an official web address linking to a press release in order to verify their position.

Barcelona
Located on the northeastern Mediterranean coast of Spain, this city has a rich and diverse history, with its roots dating back to Roman times. The fruitful medieval period established Barcelona's position as the economic and political center of the Western Mediterranean. The city's Gothic Quarter bears witness to the splendor enjoyed by the city from the 13th to the 15th centuries.
The 20th century ushered in widespread urban renewal throughout Barcelona city, culminating in its landmark Eixample district, which showcases some of Barcelona's most distinctive Catalan art-nouveau, or modernista, buildings. The Catalan Antoni Gaudí, one of the most eminent architects, designed buildings such as La Pedrera, the Casa Batlló, and the Sagrada Família church, which have become world-famous landmarks.
In 1992, Barcelona gained international recognition by hosting the Olympic games, which brought about a massive upturn in its tourism industry. For visitors, this has translated into the very modern yet incredibly old city you see now in the 21st century, where new elements work to both preserve and celebrate the city’s heritage and origins.
Barcelona has plenty of outdoor markets, restaurants, shops, museums, and churches. The city is also very walkable, with an extensive and reliable Metro system for more far-flung destinations.

By plane:
The international airport of Barcelona is called Barcelona-El Prat and is located 10 km from the city center. The airport is well connected to airport hubs in Europe and several locations around the world. Once you get to the airport, you have several options to reach the city center.
To the city center:

By shuttle bus: AEROBUS (https://aerobusbarcelona.es). This bus connects Barcelona Airport (Terminal 1 and Terminal 2) with the city center (Pl. Espanya / Pl. Catalunya) in 35 minutes. It runs every day of the year with departures every 5 minutes and costs EUR 6.75.

By train: TRAIN R2 NORD (https://rodalies.gencat.cat). This train connects Terminal 2 of the airport with the city center (Barcelona–Passeig de Gràcia). It runs every day of the year with departures every 30 minutes and costs EUR 4.60.

By taxi: Taxis just outside the arrival area. The taxi from the airport to the city center (Plaza Catalunya) costs approximately EUR 30–35. Public taxis in Barcelona can charge four types of fares. These fares must be visible inside the taxi and are usually printed on a sticker over the window. Finally, the amount payable must be indicated on the taximeter. VTC apps that work in Barcelona are Bolt and Cabify and might offer cheaper rates.
To the conference venue:

By train: TRAIN R2 NORD (https://rodalies.gencat.cat). You should get off at “Barcelona Sants” station. From there, you can take METRO L5 (get off at Sant Pau | Dos de Maig). Alternatively, you may take a taxi just outside the station. The train from the airport costs EUR 4.60, and the metro costs EUR 2.55. You can buy the tickets at the train station and metro stops, respectively. The taxi from the train station to the conference venue costs about EUR 10.

By metro: LINE L9 (https://www.tmb.cat). This metro line connects Barcelona Airport (Terminal 1 and Terminal 2) with the city (get off at Collblanc). From here, you can take METRO L5 (get off at Sant Pau | Dos de Maig). The metro from the airport costs EUR 5,50 and the city metro EUR 2,55.

We want your stay in Barcelona during the conference to be as comfortable as possible. Beware of unauthorized registration and hotel solicitations
Note that Sciforum is the only official registration platform to register to ICARS 2025 and that we are not associated with any hotel agency (other than those listed on the conference website). While other hotel resellers and travel agencies may contact you with offers for your trip, they are not endorsed by or affiliated with ICARS 2025 or Sciforum. Beware that entering into financial agreements with non-endorsed companies can have costly consequences.
Event Awards
To recognize the outstanding works presented during our conference, we are excited to announce four awards for our participants.
