Welcome from the Chairs
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 4th World Sustainability Forum. The Forum covers research in many areas relating to sustainability and sustainable development, and includes sessions in many important areas:
|
![]() |
Participants in this multidisciplinary conference will have the opportunity to examine, explore and critically engage with issues and advances in these and related areas. We hope to facilitate debates on theoretical and practical investigations, and to allow participants to "make a difference".
A special feature of the Forum is that it is an electronic conference. This type of conference is particularly appropriate and useful for the 4th World Sustainability Forum because research concerned with sustainability and sustainable development is progressing rapidly, while activities in industry, government and academia are simultaneously becoming increasingly globalized. Successful research therefore requires interaction with individuals and groups around the world, demonstrating the need for new types of communication within our community. An electronic conference provides a platform for rapid and direct exchanges about the latest research findings, as well as a possibility for global meetings with no limitations related to traveling. To further remove barriers to "attendance", participation in the Forum as an author or other participant is free of charge. The 4th World Sustainability Forum will be held at www.sciforum.net/conference/wsf-4, on a platform developed by MDPI to organize electronic conferences and sponsored by MDPI and the scientific open access journal Sustainability. Accepted papers will be published in the proceedings of the Forum, and selected papers will be published in Sustainability. I offer my sincere thanks to all attendees, and especially to authors, keynote presenters, members of the Scientific Advisory Committee, session chairs and organizers.
I hope that your participation in the 4th World Sustainability Forum will prove to be interesting, productive and enjoyable. Prof. Dr. Marc A. Rosen

sciforum-000081 | Living with the Dead: Contested Spaces and the Right to Cairo's Inner-City Cemeteries | , | N/A |
Show Abstract |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Cairo's spontaneous poor communities signify the growing socio-economic disparity since 1970s open door economic liberalisation policy and 1990s IMF's structural adjustment program. These poverty belts attract rural migrants and urban poor from Cairo's residential core areas as a result of high land prices, shortage of affordable housing and decay of existing housing stock . Typical example of these poverty belts are cemetery areas (Cities of the Dead ) within Cairo's eastern fringes. The aim of the article is to examine the contested spaces within the Cities of the Dead, initially through a reconsideration of the number of occupants and of the relative balance of tomb dwellings and more conventional shanty town buildings. The tombs and mausoleums of the city's ancient and extensive cemeteries have been occupied by squatters, some of whom live in the mausoleums themselves, others in self-built constructions between and around the tombs. The paper raises several questions such as : - Does lack of affordability to provide an alternative residence play a key role in the occupation by people of tombs (hawch) by people in these cemeteries? Is there any possibility of classifying tomb dwellers into social groupings with various job types, income levels, educational status as well as residence patterns? - Does living in tombs generate a new value system, cultural patterns and social behaviour? Can one consider cemeteries as an isolated marginal area within Cairo's society? The current study is organised into three main sections. The first of which focuses on the general background of the Cities of the Dead in central Cairo looking at the socio-demographic and economic conditions characterising various cemetery areas with an emphasis on reasons behind living in cemeteries. Then the uniqueness of these Cairo squatter settlements is challenged through a range of socio-economic data which demonstrate the way their supposedly marginalised occupants are in part integrated into the city's urban economy. A comparative study is made of various household characteristics based on secondary data from official reports and previous academic research. These results will further relate to both small area survey and population census data concerning age structure, marital status, educational levels, jobs, access to the CBD and the inner city, income level, residence, social relationships and formal and informal services . The second part of the study sets out to examine socio-economic problems in the area generally and more specifically relating to the tombs (hawch) cemetery people. The latter can be regarded as an example of squatter settlements together with those people living in the residential 'islands' or in-fillings (gozor) which resemble more conventional spontaneous or informal squatter areas elsewhere in Cairo. Inter- generational perception of future prospects and expectations will be investigated within focus group discussion with people's responses and coping strategies being examined. This provides the basis against which the third section of the study will explore the scenarios and alternatives with differentiation being made between people living in tombs (hawch) and those in residential islands (gozor) and surrounding spontaneous settlements such as Manshiet Nasser. In this section the empirical small area survey examines the northern cemeteries' tomb dwellers' right to the city and their resistance against official eviction plans . Such relocation policy is attributed to the fact that these cemeteries provide urban investment opportunities as a result of good road accessibility and geographical propinquity to Medieval Cairo's historical quarters and its ongoing tourist-orientated urban gentrification projects. Behind the declared official justification for eviction proposals of tomb dwellers, to Greater Cairo's suburban eastern desert, in terms of improving the environment and creating sustainable settlements, there lies a wider but hidden agenda. The local municipality aims to clear such strategically central areas from the presence of the poor, with legislation to protect the environment as a justification for securing access to land for urban gentrification projects. The paper emphasises the significance of poverty alleviation initiatives in strengthening urban poor's capacity to negotiate with local authorities for security of land tenure and legal recognition of their spontaneous settlements. The study proposes a stakeholder approach to the sustainable development of inner city poverty areas, whilst advocating radical policy action and collaborative planning for consolidating bottom up urban governance. Partnership between community based groups, grass root organisations, local authorities and planners would support urban poor's sustainable initiatives to improve their housing standards and basic services.
sciforum-002424 | The Emergence and Spread of Eco-urban Developments Around the World | , | N/A |
Show Abstract |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Neighbourhood scale sustainability districts are coming to serve a growing role in urban sustainability strategies (Barton 2000; Barton et al. 1995; Taylor 2000; Winston 2009; Jabareen 2006). In modern times, efforts to construct sustainable alternative neighbourhood scale developments date back to isolated voluntary initiatives in 1970s Europe and the United States. In the past decade, however, ecodistricts, écoquartiers, eco-cities, zero/low-carbon/carbon-positive cities, ecopolises, One Planet Communities and solar cities, have become frames – sometimes the dominant frame -- used to justify and orient the construction of new pieces of city in a growing range of countries worldwide (Joss et al. 2013; Chang and Sheppard 2013). This paper documents our work to catalogue such eco-urban developments worldwide. The catalogue we have produced provides evidence that eco-urban developments today are part of a movement toward green global cosmopolitanism (Blok, 2012), but that nonetheless expresses itself in fragmented ways in different world regions. That is, eco-urban developments are being pursued, increasingly, based on standardized models and forms which are coming to redefine relevant and meaningful sustainability efforts in specific economic, political, social and design-based terms. In so doing, they are changing the solution set we associate with sustainable development and even the characterization of the problem of unsustainability at the same time as they change the face of our cities. Our catalogue of eco-urban developments around the world serves as a first step to a deeper understanding of these dynamics and trends at global and regional scales.
sciforum-003170 | Economic and Environmental Assessments of Energy Conservation in Residential Building to meet the Electrical, Heating and Cooling Loads with Micro Gas Turbine Units | , , , , | N/A |
Show Abstract |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The present study deals with the economic and environmental assessment of energy conservation in residential buildings. In this approach, the heating and cooling loads of a typical residential building in Tehran with micro gas turbine units have been considered. This 8000 m2 area building possesses 10 floors with 4 units per floor. Five distinguished scenarios, wall insulation, roof insulation, shading, triple glazing and all of the four energy conversation methods have been proposed concerning the decrease in the energy usage. Each of the energy conservation methods was studied separately in four former scenarios and all of these methods were investigated simultaneously in the fifth latter scenario. To achieve the heating, cooling and electrical loads, a number of 30 kW combined heat and power (CHP) micro gas turbine units have been taken into consideration without energy conversation methods. The results show that the best scenario concerning the minimum value of energy loss is that for which the mean heating and cooling loads were 514.58 and 519.08 kW, respectively. Also the number of CHP micro gas turbine units reduces from 30 to 11 and also the total electricity cost decrease from 0.32 to 0.16 US$/kWh with consideration social cost of air pollution.
sciforum-002264 | The Potential Use of Strategic Environmental Assessment to Protect the Core Elements of Indigenous Culture: Exploring Subtractive and Additive Processes and the Implications of Resource | , , | N/A |
Show Abstract |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This study will compare Canadian and Australian case studies to glean insights and compile lessons learned to better understand how resource development should occur in a way that fosters Indigenous peoples' cultural wellbeing in the present and the future. Both Indigenous populations experienced the institutional effects of European settler state policies, which subsequently engendered forms of social and political colonialism, and both Indigenous populations have had similar experiences with transnational mining companies encroaching on traditional lands as part of a broader process of globalization. We contend that we need a fundamentally different approach to resource development that affects Indigenous traditional lands in both Ontario, Canada, and NSW, Australia; one that takes into consideration the core values needed to sustain Indigenous cultural wellbeing in the present and the future.
sciforum-002601 | Relevant Factors in Assessing Vulnerability of Urban Systems in Latin-American Cities | , , , | N/A |
Show Abstract |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Urban vulnerability is difficult to quantify, basically because of the difference among variables that contribute to its definition. Some of these parameters are originated in environmental processes and could be estimated by using efficiency indicators, others are more difficult to evaluate because of their dependence by social phenomena. In this work some ideas respect to an interdisciplinary and holistic approach are presented and discussed, developing a methodology to assess metabolism and resilience of cities under social, environmental and urban planning point of view. Preliminary results of study cases in northern Chile are also presented to justify proposed methodology to be used as predictive instrument of interventions in middle size cities. |
