15th Agronomy Webinar

Mechanisms of Light Response and Morphogenesis in Plants

Dear colleagues,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to this webinar organized in the framework of the Agronomy Special Issue “Mechanisms of Light Response and Morphogenesis in Plants.” Light is not only the primary energy source for photosynthesis but also a crucial environmental signal that regulates multiple aspects of plant growth and development, from seed germination and organ elongation to flowering and senescence. Understanding how plants perceive and respond to light is therefore essential for unravelling the molecular and physiological mechanisms that shape plant development and adaptation to the environment.

This webinar brings together researchers with expertise in plant light signalling and photomorphogenesis, who will share their insights into the complex mechanisms underlying plant responses to light, highlighting recent advances and emerging perspectives in this fascinating field.

We would like to thank our invited speakers for their contributions and hope that this webinar will stimulate engaging discussions on how advances in our fundamental understanding of light signalling can be translated into strategies to improve crop performance and productivity.

Dr. Alessandra Boccaccini

Università Campus Bio-medico di Roma, Italy;I am a researcher in the field of plant molecular biology, with a particular interest in understanding how environmental signals regulate gene expression. After obtaining my PhD from Sapienza University of Rome, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Lausanne, where I investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying plant responses to light, particularly phototropism and shade avoidance. Since 2025, I have been a researcher at Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, where my research focuses on the molecular mechanisms regulating gene expression in response to environmental cues.

Dr. Paola Vittorioso

Università di Roma, Italy;Dr. Paola Vittorioso is a researcher in Plant Molecular Biology at Sapienza University of Rome, in the Department of Biology and Biotechnology “Charles Darwin”. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms regulating plant growth and development, with particular emphasis on seed dormancy and germination, light signalling, and the role of transcription factors in these processes. Over the years, her work has contributed to understanding how light and hormonal signals interact to regulate seed germination and early seedling development. More recently, her research has also expanded to the epigenetic regulation of plant development and responses to environmental stresses.

Prof. Dr. Giorgio Perrella

University of Milan, Italy;Prof. Giorgio Perrella is Associate Professor of Genetics at the University of Milan, Italy. He obtained his PhD in Plant Genetics from the University of Naples Federico II and subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Universities of Warwick and Glasgow, before returning to Italy. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying plant responses to environmental signals, particularly light and temperature, with a special interest in how chromatin organization and epigenetic mechanisms contribute to the regulation of gene expression and plant development. His work has contributed to our understanding of the interplay between light signalling, chromatin dynamics, and plant growth, particularly during photomorphogenesis.
