Welcome from the Chair
Welcome to AppliedMath Webinar titled From Equations to Impact: Translate Math Research into Real-World Solutions!
Mathematics holds the power to transform our world – but how do we move from theoretical breakthroughs to tangible solutions? Join us for an insightful webinar where we bridge the gap between abstract equations and real-world applications.
In this webinar, you'll discuss the following two topics:
1) Mathematical models and their extensions to online tools
2) Common mistakes in applying quantum theory to physical systems: a case study
Whether you’re a mathematician, engineer, or policymaker, learn to turn equations into actionable innovations.
Date: 06/06/2025

Prof. Dr. Takayuki Hibi graduated with Ph.D. from the School of Science at Nagoya University in 1987. He then visited the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from August 1988 to July 1989. He worked at the School of Science of Hokkaido University from September 1990 to March 1995 and visited the University of Sydney from July 1993 to November 1993. In April 1995, he became a full professor at Osaka University and has remained there ever since. His research started with the study of algebraic combinatorics on convex polytopes and then turned to Gröbner bases, algebraic statistics, and computational commutative algebra. He organized the JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) research project entitled “Harmony of Gröbner Bases and the Modern Industrial Society” from October 2008 to March 2014. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed original articles and jointly wrote the textbook “Monomial Ideals” (Graduate Texts in Mathematics 260, Springer).
Invited Speakers

Mathematical models and their extensions to online tools
Dr. Thomas Woolley studied mathematics at the University of Oxford between 2004-2017 and is now a Reader in Applied Mathematics at Cardiff University. He specialises in translating complex biological and ecological systems into mathematical models. His research spans diverse topics, from understanding fish spots and zebra stripes to optimising ecological resources and analysing bat migration patterns. Recently, his work on COVID-19 modelling for the Welsh Government informed critical public health policies, and he was awarded the Operational Research Society's Griffiths Medal for his contributions to health systems modelling.

Common mistakes in applying quantum theory to physical systems: a case study
Dr. Artur Czerwinski earned his Ph.D. in Physics in 2018 from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland, with a focus on mathematical and quantum physics. He has conducted research at multiple institutions, including the Institute for Quantum Computing, the Center for Theoretical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and held a postdoctoral position at the Centre of New Technologies, University of Warsaw. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun and Lead Researcher at Startova.pl, where he is involved in ESA-funded projects on quantum technologies, including “Space-Based Links for the Quantum Internet.” His expertise covers quantum optics, quantum communication, and modeling of open quantum systems. He is also an IOP Trusted Reviewer and was honored with the Outstanding Reviewer Award in 2023.
