4th Designs Webinar

Additive Manufacturing – Conscious Design and Regulatory Aspects for Implantable Devices

As advancements in additive manufacturing continue to reshape the landscape of medical technology, particularly in the development of patient-specific implantable devices, it is imperative that we approach this progress with both innovation and responsibility.

This webinar is intended to welcome discussions that are aimed to bridge cutting-edge engineering with the essential frameworks of design ethics, safety and regulatory compliance.

The main purpose is to encourage debates on these critical aspects that still hamper the application of additive manufacturing in the medical field and that too often are not properly assessed before surgery.

Introduction
Bio
Dr. Pascoletti received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, and the Ph.D. in Industrial and Information Engineering—all from the University of Perugia (Italy). She is currently an Adjunct Professor and Research Fellow within the Department of Engineering at the University of Perugia (Italy). Her research interests cover the study of numerical models (multibody and finite element) for machine design and optimization, with particular attention to industrial case studies and biomechanical applications (orthopaedic prosthetic devices and human body numerical models). Currently, part of her work is also dedicated to the study of statistical methods for shape analysis, focused on, but not limited to, bones’ shape; specifically, the main field of investigations are statistical shape models, morphing technique and principal component analysis.

Engineering Design Research Innovations for Medical Design Customization
Bio
Dr. Paul Egan is a tenure-track assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas Tech University and leads the Medicine, Mechanics, and Manufacturing Design (M3D) Lab. The M3D Lab investigates a unique integration of engineering design methods for system modelling, optimization, and experimentation of diverse biomedical systems using computational design and additive manufacturing approaches. Research applications focus on 3D printing for tissue scaffolds, personalized nutrition, prosthetics, and medical devices. Dr. Egan’s engineering design teachings promote mechanical design innovation for positive societal impacts, which aligns with his leadership in entrepreneurial activities and medical technology start-ups.
