Athanasios Loukas is a Professor of Engineering Hydrology-Management and Development of Water Resources, Head of the Transportation and Hydraulic Engineering Department, Director of the “Hydraulic Works and Environmental Management” Lab, and Director of the Master’s Program “Water Resources” at the School of Rural and Surveying Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2018–today). Previously, he was affiliated with the University of Thessaly, where he served as a Professor, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering (2008-2012), Dean of the Faculty of Engineering (2015-2018), Laboratory Director, and Director of an international Master’s Program (2010-2018). He is a visiting professor in the U.S.A. and at European universities.
During his academic studies and career, he received numerous fellowships, prizes, and awards, such as the Fulbright Research Scholarship in 2013. He has delivered many keynote and invited talks.
Loukas is Section Editor-in-Chief of “Water Resources Management, Policy and Governance” within Water, Editor-in-Chief of European Water, and an Editorial Board Member of Water Resources Management and Scientific Review Engineering and Environmental Sciences. He has been an active reviewer for many international journals in the fields of hydrology, water resources management, GIS and remote sensing applications, environmental modeling and management, and others. He is a regular reviewer of national and European research proposals as well as an evaluator, and he is responsible for research project certification. He is affiliated with national and international scientific organizations such as EWRA and EGU.
His research activity focuses on hydrology, hydrological hazards, and risks (droughts and floods); climate change impacts; and water resources management. He coordinated and participated in numerous national and international research programs. In addition to his research activity, he participates in consistent outreach, and acts as a mentor of a high number of post-graduate and Ph.D. students.
Prof. Loukas is the author and co-author of more than 450 international journal publications, conference proceedings publications, books, and technical reports. His published work has received over 3100 citations, as indicated in the Scopus database, with an h-index=30 and over 5700 citations, as indicated in the Google Scholar database (h-index=39; i10-index=87). He is listed in the top 2% of the most influential scientists globally (according to his publications and the citations of his publications for his career until 2022, 2023) by Stanford University (2023, 2024).

Dr. Pantelis Sidiropoulos is an Assistant Professor of the Simulation and Management of Groundwater Resources of Transportation and Hydraulic Engineering Dept., Lab of Hydraulic Works and Environmental Management, and the Master’s Program “Water Resources” at the School of Rural and Surveying Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2023–today). He was a Lecturer with the Civil Engineering Dept. of the University of Thessaly (2015-2023) and with the Civil Engineering Dept. of the University of Applied Science of Thessaly (2015-2018). He is a registered, professional civil engineer in Greece and is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece, the Association of Civil Engineers of Greece, the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, the Greek Committee for Water Resources Management, the Hellenic Hydrotechnical Association, and the Hellenic Ecological Society. He has participated in eleven national and European research projects and in seven hydrological and hydraulic studies and water resources management projects. He is a Topical Advisory Panel Member of the Civil Engineering Section of Applied Sciences (MDPI), a Topical Advisory Panel Member of Hydrology (MDPI), an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Environmental Science and Engineering Technology, Guest Editor of the Special Issue "Groundwater Pollution: Sources, Mechanisms, and Prevention" (Second Edition) of Hydrology (MDPI), and a reviewer of twenty-one international scientific journals. He is the author and co-author of more than one hundred referred international journal publications, conference proceedings, books, and technical reports. His published work has received 463 citations, as indicated on Google Scholar (h-index =12, i10-index =14); 231 citations, as indicated in the Scopus database, with h-index=9; and 235 citations, as indicated on the Web of Science database (h-index=9). The registration for ECWS-9 will be free of charge! The registration includes attendance to all conference sessions.
If you are registering several people under the same registration, please do not use the same email address for each person, but their individual university email addresses. Thank you for your understanding.
Please note that the submission and registration are two separate parts. Only scholars who registered can receive a link to access the conference live streaming. The deadline for registration is 9 November2024.
Instructions for Authors
ECWS-9 will accept abstracts only. The accepted abstracts will be available online on Sciforum.net during and after the conference.
Important Deadline
1. Deadline for abstract submission: 13 July 2025
2. Abstract acceptance notification: 10 August 2025. You will be notified of the acceptance of an oral/poster presentation in a separate email.
1. The abstract structure should include the introduction, methods, results, and conclusions sections of about 200–300 words in length.
2. All abstracts should be submitted and presented in clear, publication-ready English with accurate grammar and spelling.
3. You may submit multiple abstracts. However, only one abstract will be selected for oral presentation.
4. The abstracts submitted to this conference must be original and novel, without prior publication in any journals or it will not be accepted to this conference.
1. The submitting author must ensure that all co-authors are aware of the contents of the abstract.
2. Please select only one presenter for each submission. If you would like to change the presenter after submission, please email us accordingly.
- Should include the title, authors, contact details and main research findings, as well as tables, figures and graphs where necessary.

Publication Opportunities
1. Water Journal Publication
Participants in this conference are cordially invited to contribute a full manuscript to the conference's Special Issue (to be updated), published in Water (ISSN 2073-4441, Impact Factor 3.0), with a 10% discount on the publication fee. Please note, if you have IOAP/association discounts, conference discounts will be combined with IOAP/association discounts. Conference discounts cannot be combined with reviewer vouchers. All submitted papers will undergo MDPI’s standard peer-review procedure. The abstracts should be cited and noted on the first page of the paper.
2. Proceeding Paper Publication
All accepted abstracts will be published in the conference report of the 9th International Electronic Conference on Water Sciences in the Environmental Sciences Proceedings (ISSN: 2673-4931); if you wish to publish an extended proceeding paper (4-8 pages), please submit it to the same journal after the conference.
Authors are asked to disclose that it is a proceeding paper of the ECWS-9 conference paper in their cover letter. Carefully read the rules outlined in the 'Instructions for Authors' on the journal’s website and ensure that your submission adheres to these guidelines.
