The multi-story wooden construction is becoming increasingly important. Glued elements like cross-laminated timber and glued laminated timber are used. In addition to the structural design, the adhesives used as well as the composition of the materials are also very important. An overview is given on the current status regarding the properties of adhesives, testing, and standardization.
Both speakers have many years of experience in research and teaching in Europe.

ETH Zürich, Institute for Building Materials;Peter Niemz was Prof. for Wood Physics at ETH Zürich, Department of Civil Engineering from the ETH Zürich from 1996 to 2015 until his retirement. The main focus of his work is on studying physical-mechanical characteristics of wood and timber materials as well as their structure-property relationships and also on modeling them. He worked also in the area of gluing from solid wood for the timber construction. An overview of his publications and talks can be found here. For his research efforts in nondestructive testing, he was awarded the Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation of Wood Distinguished Service Award by the International Organizing Committee for the Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation of Wood Symposium (at the conference 2009), 2014 he got Wilhelm- Klauditz- Medal. He gives lectures in Wood Physics , Nondestructive Testing and Wood Technology. Since 2002 he is member of the IAWS (International Academy of Wood Science).
RISE Research Institute of Sweden;Alar Just is a professor at Tallinn University of Technology and a researcher at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden. His research is related to fire resistance of timber structures and structural reclaimed timber. He is currently supervising 6 PhD students and has been supervised 6 successful PhD studies in this field. He has conducted more than 250 fire tests. Dr. Just is a head of Estonian delegation in CEN TC 250 SC 5. He is member of TC250 - SC5.T4 project team, drafting the next generation of EN 1995-1-2.
Bern University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland;Gordian Stapf is a tenure-track professor of solid wood bonding at Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH), Switzerland. His work focuses on structural timber bonding, engineered wood adhesives, adhesive performance and durability, and the testing and qualification of bonded timber products. Before joining BFH, he held senior positions in technology management, application engineering and certification at Henkel Engineered Wood Adhesives. He previously worked at the Materials Testing Institute (MPA) of the University of Stuttgart, where he was involved in research, certification, technical approvals and failure investigations in timber construction. He also contributes to European standardization activities in timber engineering.
