Welcome message from the chairs

It give us great pleasure to invite you to the international conference on “Holography meets Advanced Manufacturing” jointly organized by CIPHR group, Institute of Physics, University of Tartu, Estonia and Optical Sciences Center, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia during 20-22nd of February 2023.

In the recent years, there has been a significant collaboration between the research areas: Holography and Advanced manufacturing to develop imaging systems beyond the state-of-the-art. This three-day conference dedicates the first, second and third day to holography, advanced manufacturing and product development respectively.

This conference will provide a platform for exchanging ideas, interdisciplinary, international collaboration, with three keynote talks from three world-renowned researchers, several invited talks across the globe, poster presentations for students and industry ready ideas. There are many student prizes every day to win. All accepted and presented submissions will be published in MDPI proceedings.

We welcome submissions in the broad areas of holography and advanced manufacturing which includes but not limited to:

Digital holography, incoherent holography, computational imaging, microscopy, diffractive optics, quantitative phase imaging, structured light, tomography, optical security, cryptography, laser beam shaping, metalenses, micro/nanofabrication, femtosecond fabrication, OAM beams, optoelectronic materials and devices, non-diffracting beams and space-time correlations and non-linear optics.

Selected submissions will be invited to the special issue on “Research in Computational Optics” in MDPI photonics (IF – 2.536) with APC waiver and special discounts.

Call for Papers

We will open call for papers and poster presentations. We welcome submissions in the broad areas of holography and advanced manufacturing which includes but not limited to: digital holography, incoherent holography, computational imaging, microscopy, diffractive optics, quantitative phase imaging, structured light, tomography, optical security, cryptography, laser beam shaping, metalenses, micro/nanofabrication, femtosecond fabrication, OAM beams, optoelectronic materials and devices, non-diffracting beams and space-time correlations and non-linear optics.

Abstract submission deadline is January 15, 2023.

Acceptance notification deadline is January 31, 2023.

Full paper submission deadline is February 15, 2023.

All accepted and presented submissions will be published in MDPI proceedings. Selected submissions will be invited to the special issue on “Research in Computational Optics” in MDPI photonics (IF – 2.536) with APC waiver and special discounts.

Prof. Vijayakumar Anand received his Ph.D. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India in 2015. He was a PBC outstanding postdoctoral fellow at Ben Gurion University, Israel from 2015-2018. From 2019 to 2021, he was a Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Enterprise Fellow (Nanophotonics Fellow) at Swinburne University, Australia. He started his position as Associate Professor at University of Tartu in 2022. He has published more than 100 journal articles, conference proceedings and book chapters. He is also an author of a bestselling textbook on Design and Fabrication of Diffractive Optical Elements with MATLAB, published by SPIE press. He has been elected to the editorial board of Nature Springer Applied Physics B: Laser and Optics and Chinese Optics Letters. His current research interests include computational optics, imaging, digital holography, diffractive optics, and microfabrication.

Vinoth Balasubramani, is a senior researcher in King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia. His current research is focused on high-resolution 3D multimodal imaging and analysis for Biological samples, coherent and incoherent imaging, optical sensors, etc., He obtained his PhD degree from the National Taiwan Normal University, Taiwan. He received ‘National Taiwan scholarship’ from the Taiwan Ministry of Education to purse his PhD research. His PhD research solved several practical issues in holographic tomographic imaging and analysis of living cells. For his excellent research performance, he was honored with an ‘Outstanding graduate award -2019’ from Ministry of Education-Taiwan. For his research accomplishments on the development of novel 3D imaging and analysis systems, he is awarded with the most prestigious ‘Young Research Scholar Award -2018’ from the Taiwan Government and China Technical Consultants Inc., (CTCI). He also received ‘NTNU Outstanding Activity Achievement Award-2018’ for his contribution to science and technology. He is also honored with ‘NTNU Outstanding Studentship Award’ for his excellent performance in academic as well as in his research field. B. Vinoth has delivered over 5 invited talks including OSA DH meeting-2021 held in Washington DC – USA. He has authored 2 book chapters, more than 10 journal publications, and over 15 conference proceedings. He was as an organizing head for Taiwan-Japan and Taiwan-Poland workshops held in Taiwan, and also served as a session chair for Information Photonics conference 2020 (IP2020)-Taiwan. Swinburne University of Technology

Soon Hock is a senior researcher at Swinburne University of Technology. He completed his BSc and BEng at Monash University, where he also completed his PhD in 2016, with a focus on lithography and the self-assembly of nanoparticles. He began working at the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication as a Process Engineer in the latter half of 2016 before perusing postdoctoral research in the Centre for Micro-Photonics at Swinburne University of Technology in early 2017. He is now scientific lead on an Australian Research Council Linkage project working with a defence research industry partner. His research areas include: photo and electron-beam lithography of sensors and photonics devices, PVD and RIE of nanostructured thin films, and energetic materials. Recently he has expanded into laser fabrication, infrared spectroscopy, remote sensing, and holography.

Dr. K. Kukli is currently working as full-time professor in materials science at the Laboratory of Thin Film Technology in the Institute of Physics, University of Tartu. He has conducted research in the field of thin functional solid inorganic layers since 1992. The method advancing the synthesis of thin metal oxide or metal films has been atomic layer deposition. Ultrathin films were studied as potential components of nanoelectronic or optical devices. Throughout the academic curriculum, he has either himself carried out or organized the analysis of structural, chemical, electrical, magnetic or waveguiding properties of the layered nanomaterials. The thin film laboratory is herewith equipped, besides processing and analytical techniques, by litographical capabilities to design optoelectronic nanostructures.

Dr. Amudhavel Jayavel is a senior researcher at CIPHR group, University of Tartu, Estonia. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the Pondicherry Public Central University, India in 2015. He worked as an Assistant Professor (Senior) cum Assistant Director of Digital Outreach in the School of Computing Science and Engineering, VIT Bhopal University, India. His research outcome includes 100+ indexed scholarly publications with more than 800+ citations, in peer-reviewed Scopus & SCI indexing reputed journals like IEEE, ACM, Springer link, Elsevier, etc. His current research interests include Computer Vision, Deep Learning, and Quantum Machine Learning.

Professor emeritus Peeter Saari was the Head of Laboratory of Physical Optics in the Institute of Physics of the University of Tartu (Estonia) for many decades. Has also served as the director of the Institute in 1981-1988. He graduated cum laude from the University of Tartu in 1968 with a major in theoretical physics. He received his PhD from the University of Tartu in 1972 and DSc from the Institute of Physics of the Estonian Academy of Sciences in 1980. He is a fellow of OPTICA (Formerly the Optical Society of America) and an elected member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences and of the European Academy of Sciences. His research interests have included solid state and chemical physics, ultrafast phenomena, and physical optics. He has authored or co-authored about two hundred scientific journal papers, book chapters, conference publications, and patents.

Prof. Joseph Rosen is a Benjamin H. Swig Professor of Optoelectronics with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. He received his BSc, MSc, and DSc degrees in electrical engineering from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology in 1984, 1987, and 1992, respectively. He is a fellow of OPTICA (Formerly the Optical Society of America) and the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE). His research interests include digital holography, optical microscopy, diffractive optics, interferometry, statistical optics, biomedical optics, optical computing, and image processing. He has co-authored more than 250 book chapters, scientific journal articles, patents and conference publications.

Saulius Juodkazis is Professor and Deputy Director of the Optical Sciences Centre at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. In 1998, he received his PhD (cotutelle) in experimental physics and material sciences jointly from Vilnius University, Lithuania, and Lyon-I University, France. His current interests are in the fields of light-matter interactions occurring in small space (nanoscale) and time (femtoseconds) domains. He planned, established, and directs a multi-user Nanotechnology facility at Swinburne open to the Australian National Fabrication Facility ANFF users from December 2011. His research is focused on applying principles of light-field enhancement and its spectral control for applications in micro-optics, solid-state lighting, and solar energy conversion. Professor Juodkazis has contributed to the development of a three-dimensional laser printing with nano-/micro-scale precision using femtosecond laser for applications in opto-fluidic, micro-optics, optical memory, and photonic crystals. He has shown experimentally the creation of high-pressure density phases of materials using tightly focused ultra-short laser pulses. He demonstrated that nano-textured surface of Si (black-Si) has bactericidal/biocidal property and acts as “mechanical antibiotic”, which can be mass produced. This work received 2017 Eureka prize for scientific research in Australia. He is Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE)

Co-founder and the CEO of deep tech startup LightCode Photonics, Estonia

Heli Valtna, PhD, is a co-founder and the CEO of deep tech startup LightCode Photonics. Valtna holds a PhD in Physics, specializing on wave optics, from the University of Tartu, Estonia, and completed postdoctoral studies at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, Germany. In 2017 she was awarded with the Young Scientist Award by the Cultural Foundation of the President of Estonia and she is a member of The Estonian Young Academy of Sciences. LightCode changes the way a robot looks at you by delivering the world's first Software Defined 3D Camera for the service robots to automate mobility-related tasks on ground, at sea, in air, and in space. LightCode uses an innovative approach for acquiring 3D images based on decades of research in optics and light detection. They package LiDAR performance into an economical and compact 3D camera. This is a breakthrough technology for mobility.

Tatsuki Tahara received his B.E., M.E., and D.E. degrees in electronics and information science from the Kyoto Institute of Technology, Japan, in 2007, 2009, and 2013, respectively. He was a research fellow with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) from 2011 to 2013, an assistant professor with the Faculty of Engineering Science, Kansai University, Osaka, Japan, from 2013 to 2018, and a special appointment associated professor with the National Institute of Informatics (NII), Japan, from 2018 to 2019, and a researcher with Precursory Research for Embryonic Science and Technology (PRESTO), the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), Japan, from 2016 to 2020. He has published a roadmap article of incoherent digital holography (IDH) with famous inventors of IDH in 2022 (https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00340-022-07911-x). He is currently a senior researcher with the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT). His research interests include incoherent digital holography and multidimensional imaging with digital holography.

Senior Beamline Scientist at Australian Synchrotron (Victoria, Australia)

Dr. Jitraporn (Pimm) Vongsvivut is a Senior Scientist at the Infrared Microspectroscopy (IRM) beamline, ANSTO ‒ Australian Synchrotron. Her main research interest is focused on developments of cutting-edge vibrational spectroscopy and chemometrics for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. She has gained an extensive experience in the latest development of synchrotron-IR techniques at NSLS (USA), SOLEIL (France), Diamond (UK) and SLRI (Thailand). At ANSTO, she has developed new soft-contact piezo-controlled and in-house macro-ATR techniques, which have been successfully applied and proved to be effective for a diverse range of user experiments. She has published 1 book chapter and 130 journal articles as primary and co-authors in high-impact journals, having an h-index of 30 and >2,440 citations (Google Scholar)

Dr. Jackin obtained his Ph.D degree from Utsunomiya University, Japan in 2013 and then continued as a post-doc researcher in the same laboratory until 2016. His research interests were diffraction theories and computer generated holography. He then joined the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) as a Researcher in 2016 to work on practical realization of 3D head up displays. He then moved to the Materials Innovation Laboratory of Kyoto Institute of Technology as a project Associate Professor since 2020. His current research interests include holographic materials, digital hologram printing and structured light beams.

Shanti Bhattacharya obtained her Ph.D. in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, in 1997. She was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt award in 1998 and worked at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, for several years. She subsequently joined Analog Devices, Cambridge, USA, where she worked as a design engineer. She is currently a Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras. She has served on the board of OSA (now called Optica) and is currently an Associate Editor of Optical Engineering and Journal of Optical Microsystems. Her current research interests are meta and diffractive optics, optical MEMS, and studies relating to imaging techniques. While she loves her work with light, she also loves her breaks, which, more often than not, involve escaping to the Himalayas for a while. She is an enthusiastic hiker and enjoys several outdoor activities.

Rakesh Kumar Singh is Associate Professor at the Department of Physics, IIT (BHU), India. He obtained his master degree from the BHU and Ph.D degree from the IIT Delhi. After completing his Ph.D. thesis, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Oulu, Finland, and later moved to the University of Electro-Communications (UEC), Tokyo, Japan as a fellow of the Japanese Society of Promotion of Science (JSPS). Dr. Singh has been a visiting researcher to the National University of Ireland, Denmark Technical University, Tel Aviv University, Bar Ilan University Israel, and Huaqiao University China. His research work is in the area of Optics and Photonics such as computational imaging, Optical Metrology, coherence optics, digital holography, laser speckle etc. He is senior member of the SPIE, Optica, and life member of the Optical Society of India

Dr. Kumar is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics, SRM University-AP, Andhra Pradesh, India. He received his PhD degree in Physics from IIT(ISM) Dhanbad in June 2018. Before joining SRM-AP, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Electro-optics Laboratory, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. The fellowship was sponsored by Planning and Budgeting Committee (PBC) of the Council for Higher Education, Israel. Prior to that, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at Smart Computational Imaging Laboratory, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, China, and National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore. Dr. Inbarasan Muniraj holds Ph.D. degree (2017) in Optical Engineering and M.E. degree (2013) in Computer Engineering and B.E. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering (2009) from University College Dublin, Ireland (UCD), Chosun University South Korea, and Anna University Chennai, respectively. He worked as research scientist in Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, South Korea. His PhD was sponsored by the prestigious Government of Ireland under Postgraduate Scholarship Programme (IRC) for the year of 2014-2017. After a yearlong postdoctoral research experience from UCD, he worked for Intel Corporation in Ireland, on a few different roles, for 2.4 years. He is currently implementing 2 Government of India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) sponsored projects (one with Science and Engineering Research Board and one with International Cooperation Division). His primary research interests are developing a non-invasive imaging system for low-cost biomedical applications. In addition to this, Dr. Muniraj is also interested in instrumenting low light level (photon-counting) imaging systems for various imaging modalities such as 4D light field imaging, and holographic microscopy. He has authored over 40 publications in peer- reviewed reputed journals and delivered talks at various prestigious international conferences. He also authored a book in SPIE spotlight series and an inventor of two Indian and one US Patents.

Suhas P Veetil is currently Associate Professor in School of Engineering Science and Technology at Higher Colleges of Technology, UAE. He received his Ph.D. in 2006 from Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India. He was a postdoctoral fellow under BrainKorea 21 fellowship in South Korea and also awarded DAAD fellowship, Germany. Igor Shevkunov has been a postdoctoral researcher at Tampere University since 2017. He received his PhD in Optics from St. Petersburg State University, Russia, in 2013. He is the author of over 80 refereed papers. His main research interests are optical experiments, digital holography, phase retrieval, denoising, and interferometry, with key achievements in the development of novel approaches for computational imaging, specifically complex-valued wavefront processing and reconstruction.

Research Assistant Professor, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA

“Mariana Potcoava is a research professor at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in the Anatomy and Cell Biology Department. She received her Ph.D. in Applied Physics in 2009 from the University of South Florida under the supervision of Professor Myung Kim, a pioneer in digital holography. While there, she worked on building a digital holographic microscope for human eye retinal scanning. After that she was a postdoctoral fellow at JILA and the Anschutz Medical Center through the University of Colorado. During her employment at the 3i company (2015-2016) she worked with dedicated professionals to build multiple Lattice Light-Sheet microscopes (LLSM), at 3i’s office and in the field, which gave her better skills in building commercial microscopes. In 2016 she returned to academia at UIC where she built a custom-version LLSM within the Live Cell Imaging Laboratory to provide a previously unavailable live cell imaging resource for the UIC research community. Since then, she has established a research program that requires the integration of various electro-optics subsystems, and imaging characterization for various biomedical research areas. Her research interests include computational optics, optical imaging techniques, and instrumentation development. She has authored and co-authored several academic articles, book chapters, conference papers, and patents.”

Etienne Brasselet is research director at CNRS, Laboratoire Ondes et Matière d’Aquitaine, University of Bordeaux, France. His scientific interests cover wave-matter interactions in the framework of multidisciplinary environment including nonlinear phenomena, optics and photonics, acoustics, mechanical effects of waves, solid and soft matter systems. Research activities mainly focus on situations where structured fields meet structured matter, which makes topology and vector fields at play in various circumstances.

Dr. Maria Farsari is a Research Director at FORTH/IESL, where she joined at 2003. Her main research interests are laser-based additive manufacturing, multi-photon lithography, laser-based fabrication of 2D and 3D micro and nano structures and materials processing using ultrafast lasers. Maria received her undergraduate degree from the Physics Department, University of Crete and her PhD in 1997 from the Physics Department, University of Durham, UK. After graduating, she worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Universities of Durham and Sussex and as a Senior Optical Scientist for the security company DeLaRue Holographics. She was a founding member of the Dublin company Xsil Ltd.

Mangirdas Malinauskas defended PhD in 2010 at Vilnius University, Laser Research Center - "Laser Fabrication of Functional 3D Polymeric Micro/Nanostructures", supervisor Prof. R. Gadonas. During his career he has made traineeships in LZH (Prof. B.N. Chichkov) and IESL-FORTH (Dr. M. Farsari). In 2019-2022 was a specially appointed Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo, Japan), group of Prof. J. Morikawa. Currently he continues investigation fundamental study on laser 3D micro-/nano-structuring of cross-linkable materials for applications in microoptics, nanooptics (photonics), and biomedicine at VU LRC. Financing for the laboratory is acquired via National, European and worldwide (NATO, US Army) funding schemes.

Vygantas Mizeikis is a professor at the Department of Engineering and Research Institute of Electronics of Shizuoka University, Japan. He was born and raised in Lithuania where he received his PhD degree in physics from Vilnius University in 1997, and since 2000 he has been working at various universities in Japan. Aravind P. Anthur completed PhD from Electrical Engineering department of IIT Madras in the year 2014. He worked on using nonlinear processes like four-wave mixing for wavelength conversion applications. After PhD, he worked as a senior engineer in Tejas Networks, Bangalore for 1 year. After this industry stint, he went back to DCU, Ireland where he did part of his PhD experiments, where he studied the polarization and amplitude noise properties of nonlinear wavelength converters. Dr. Jagadeesh Suriyaprakash is currently working as a Distinguished Research Associate (Professor-non tenure) at Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Nanophotonic Functional Materials and Devices, SCNU, China. He is a young and dynamic researcher working in the field of designing advanced functional materials for optoelectronic, sensing, and photocatalysis applications. He graduated from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) with a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering. And also, got his research degree in Quantum Engineering Design at Osaka University, Japan. After his Post-Graduate degree, he worked as a Junior/Visiting Research Fellow in prestigious research laboratories in various countries such as India, Germany, Japan and China. He obtained a prestigious “Best Thesis” award for his Post-Graduate thesis work. He has been awarded several fellowships during his studies by merit including a special research fellowship from CAS, China; and a JASSO fellowship from Japan. Recently, he is working as a Principal Investigator in a project funded by CPSF, 2020, China. He is the author and co-author of more than 25 peer-reviewed scientific publications/conference proceedings. Currently, he is serving as a guest editor in “Frontiers in a chemical engineering journal” and “Materials”, MDPI. He has been a part of a number of scientific organizations and reviewers in SCI-indexed journals up to date. He is awarded an “Excellent Reviewer” from the journal Mat.Sci.Res., 2017. Dr. Erko Jalviste is a researcher in the Biophysics Lab of Institute of Physics, University of Tartu. He has been a visiting researcher in the Netherlands, an Humboldt fellow in Germany and a JSPS fellow in Japan. He is a coauthor of 25 papers on various different topics, being involved mostly as a computational modeler. His research includes a high-voltage circuit model of an excimer laser, an electric circuit model of an ionic polymer actuator, vibrationally and rotationally resolved electronic spectra of molecules cooled in a supersonic jet, Stark spectra of molecules doped into a polymer film, kinetics of primary excitation and electron transfer processes of bacterial photosynthesis, circular dichroism and excitation anisotropy spectra of photosynthetic antennas, diffraction loss analysis of a laser cavity with a phase step and laser beam transformation by the conical refraction effect in biaxial crystals. He is teaching a laser physics course in the University of Tartu.

Shree Krishnamoorthy is a Researcher at BioPhotonics team with Prof. Stefan Andersson-Engels at Tyndall National Institute in Cork, Ireland. She focuses on working towards bettering health for women and new-borns through her project involving optical spectroscopy that is a collaborative effort between Tyndall, Cork University Maternity hospital. She is addressing the fundamental challenges in detection of fetal hypoxia. In her PhD, from Indian institute of Technology, Madras, India, she developed and studied resonance phenomenon in optical mode-locked fiber lasers. In her PhD, she also explored cellular imaging techniques and advances in BioPhotonics through STimulated Emission Depletion (STED) microscopy, and other non-linear microscopy techniques. She is an advocate for equality, diversity and inclusion and has led the career development team for AthenaSWAN bronze award. She has an engineering degree in Electronics and Communication and a Master's degree in Communication Systems.
