International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
16 September 2025, 16:00 (CEST)
Ozone, Ozone Layer, Ozone Preservation
Welcome from the Chairs
We are pleased to invite you to join us at MDPI's upcoming International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, which will be held on 16 September 2025. This event aims to raise awareness about the importance of the ozone layer and the Montreal Protocol in protecting life on Earth.
The theme of the webinar, “From science to global action.” aims to highlight the important role of science in alerting the world to emerging issues. Forty years ago, the Vienna Convention was adopted as a result of growing concerns raised by the scientific community about the potential catastrophic impact on the ozone layer due to the proliferation of chlorofluorocarbons. With the Montreal Protocol adopted two years later, the world agreed on global action to phase out ozone damaging chlorofluorocarbons.

Keynote Speakers

PMOD/WRC, Davos, Switzerland,
Saint Petersburg State University, Russia
Dr. Eugene Rozanov is a Senior Scientist at PMOD/WRC and SPBU. In 1979 he started working In Main Geophysical Observatory and in 1986 received his PhD for the work in the atmospheric physics. In 1997 he moved to University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign to work on chemistry-climate model development. In 2001 he started his work on the solar variability influence on climate and ozone layer in IAC ETH and PMOD/WRC, Switzerland. He participated in the preparation of IPCC-2007 report and WMO and SPARC international scientific assessments on the development of the stratospheric ozone layer. Since 2001 he is involved in the several national and international projects aimed at the study of the ozone layer and climate evolution in the past and future.

Department of Geology and Geoenvironment, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece
Kostas Eleftheratos is Associate Professor of Atmospheric Physics with applications to Climatology at the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece (since 2022). In 2007 he received his PhD in Geological and Geoenvironmental Sciences from the same Department. In 2008-2011 he performed postdoctoral research at the Center for Environmental Effects on Health of the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens in the subject area of measurements of ozone and ultraviolet radiation with a Brewer spectrophotometer. He is responsible for the operation, maintenance and collection of the total ozone column and ultraviolet radiation measurements from the Brewer spectrophotometer in Athens. His research focuses on the changes in the composition of the atmosphere on short and long time and space scales (clouds, greenhouse gases, ozone, ultraviolet radiation, aerosols), the study of natural climatic oscillations, atmospheric effects from aircraft emissions, atmospheric pollution, changes in climatic parameters, and environmental effects on health.

Department of Agricultural, Environmental and Food Sciences (DiAAA), University of Molise
Pasquale Avino received his Ph.D. in Chemical Sciences at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 1997. He was appointed as Post-Doc (1997-1998) at the Department of Chemistry of the University of California, Irvine (UCI) in the Rowland (Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1995) and Blake group. He is currently Associate Professor at the Department of Agricultural, Environmental and Food Sciences of the University of Molise, Campobasso, in Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry. His scientific activity is devoted to the development of innovative analytical methodologies for the extraction, concentration and determination of organic micropollutants by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in food and environmental matrices; to the assessment of air quality in indoor and outdoor environments; to the identification and evaluation of microplastics in food and environmental matrices; biomass and gasification issues in the context of ecological transition. He was the recipient of the “Group Achievement NASA Award” in 1998. In 1998 he was awarded with the “Next Generation Award” during the 22nd International Symposium on Chromatography. In 2003 he was the recipient of the “Environmental Sapio” Award for his research in the environmental field. In 2022 he received the Medal for Ecology from the Moldavian Chemical Society. In 2024 he received the highest honor of the Institute of Ecotoxicology and Environmental Sciences (IE&ES), the “Fellowship Award” for your outstanding contribution to the society through the field of environmental science. Prof. Avino is author and co-author of different scientific publications (from Scopus data-base, https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=55916508700: 239 papers, 5136 citations, hindex 42) including original papers published on national and international journals and books (Microplastics in Agriculture and Food Science, 2025, Elsevier, ISBN 9780443222108; New Perspectives in Indoor Air Quality, 2025, Elsevier, ISBN 9780443266430).
