JCM Webinar | Interaction Between Systemic Diseases and Oral Diseases
Part of the Webinars on Clinical Medicine series
25 March 2025, 15:00 (CET)

Systemic Diseases, Periodontitis, Lung, Gastric Cancer, Pancreatic Cancer, Liver Transplantation, Saliva
Welcome from the Chair
Many systemic diseases may affect oral health. This may be a manifestation of the systemic disease itself, or an indirect effect due to medical treatment of the systemic disease. Conversely, oral health can also affect the functioning of other parts of the human body. Although many of such interactions between systemic diseases and oral diseases have been described in the scientific literature, the causal relationship still often remains unclear. Therefore, in this webinar, international experts will discuss some examples of interaction between systemic diseases and oral health in depth, to gain more insight into these interactions.

Event Chairs

Department of Oral Biochemistry, Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Dr Henk Brand is a medical biologist and associate professor at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), where he works in the Department of Oral Biochemistry. His research focuses on the relationship between chronic systemic diseases and changes in saliva composition, in particular chronic inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (celiac disease, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis), renal diseases, and the oral health of cancer survivors. In all these studies, changes in the secretion rate and composition of saliva are the key components being investigated, as they may provide potential biomarkers for the underlying diseases. His research has resulted in more than 250 articles in PubMed-indexed scientific journals.
Invited Speakers

Department of Periodontology, Faculty of Dental Medicine, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Craiova, 200349 Craiova, Romania
Dr. Petra Surlin is a dentist specialized in periodontology and Professor of periodontology at the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Craiova, Romania. Her research, published in PubMed- and Clarivate-indexed journals, focuses on the relationship between systemic diseases, especially gastrointestinal diseases (gastric and pancreatic cancers, hepatitis C, etc.) and periodontal changes, including the identification of biomarkers in gingival fluid.

Dr. Scannapieco is a pioneer in studies connecting oral and systemic diseases, including respiratory diseases. Dr. Scannapieco has served on the University at Buffalo faculty since 1991, and also served as the Chair of the Department of Oral Biology from 2004 through 2022. Over the course of his career, he has edited several books and journal supplements, and published more than 190 research articles and book chapters. He has received several awards, among these, promotion to SUNY Distinguished Professor, Distinguished Scientist Award in Oral Biology from the International Association for Dental Research, and the William J. Gies Award for Achievement from the American Dental Education Association.
