Welcome Message

In order to commemorate International Day for Biological Diversity 2024 (https://www.un.org/en/observances/biological-diversity-day), MDPI is launching a special webinar to encourage researchers to come together, take action, and highlight how the exchange of findings facilitates efforts to raise awareness in all walks of life.

Climate change, man-made changes to nature, and crimes that disrupt biodiversity, such as deforestation, land-use change, intensified agriculture, and livestock production or the growing illegal wildlife trade, can accelerate the speed of destruction of the planet. This webinar aims to encourage connection and collaboration among researchers and the international open access community to help fight against negative human-induced effects on the Earth.

We are very much looking forward to seeing you at the MDPI International Day for Biological Diversity Webinar 2024. Please find below an up-to-date outline of the presenters.

Date: 22 May 2024 at 10.00 a.m. CEST | 4:00 a.m. EDT | 4:00 p.m. CST Asia

The Concept of Ethodiversity
Bio
Dr. Adolfo Cordero-Rivera is currently a Professor of Ecology at the University of Vigo, Department of Ecology and Animal Biology. He was an Adjunct Manager of the Spanish Science program (Ministry of Science), "Biodiversity, Earth Sciences and Global Change”, subprogram of Biodiversity, from January 2004 to December 2012. He was also the sole manager of the Galician Research programs “Biodiversity and Forest resources” and “Environmental Technologies” (2006) and “Natural World and Sustainable Development” (2007–2008). Soil Biodiversity —The Hidden Majority Enabling Life on Earth!
Bio
Dr. Maria A. Tsiafouli is a researcher and academic teacher at the School of Biology (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece). She is a biologist with an MSc in Environmental Biology and a PhD in Ecology with over 20 years of experience. Her research focuses on investigating the effects of human activities (e.g., agriculture) and climate change on several aspects of biodiversity, including soil biodiversity. Furthermore, she is interested in revealing links among biodiversity and functions, environmental characteristics and ecosystem services, and in promoting the conservation of biodiversity and soil health. She teaches both graduate- and postgraduate-level courses on general ecology, conservation biology, landscape ecology, and monitoring and restoring ecosystems. She has participated in over 20 research projects on topics relevant to the Natura 2000 network of protected areas in Europe, biodiversity conservation, sustainable environmental management, organic farming, and soil health. She has authored 38 scientific articles, as well as nine books/book chapters (h-index: 21, references >2900). Currently, she is leading the “The European Atlas of Soil Fauna” initiative, which aims to map soil fauna across Europe to support management actions and policy decisions. She is part of the editorial board of the journal Agriculture (MDPI), the European Journal of Soil Biology, and the Journal of Sustainable Agriculture and Environment. She is a member of the scientific committee of the International Network of Soil Biodiversity (FAO-NETSOB) for WG1 and the Hellenic Ecosystem Service Partnership. She is also a member of the Healthy Land Advisory Group of Applied Microbiology International, a member of the board of directors of the Panhellenic Association of Bioscientists, and a coordinator of the Committee for Environment and Food.
