Welcome from the Chair
Welcome to the MDPI Reviewer Club 2025 | Biology and Life Sciences Session 2.
At MDPI, we recognize that peer review is the foundation of scientific progress. The integrity, transparency, and quality of our journals depend on the careful evaluations provided by our reviewers. In 2024, more than 215,000 reviewers contributed over 1.2 million reports to MDPI journals. This achievement reflects the strength of our community, and it is through the expertise and dedication of reviewers like you that scholarly communication continues to advance worldwide.
The MDPI Reviewer Club series was created to acknowledge this important role and to provide a space for sharing experiences, exchanging best practices, and building connections within our reviewer community.
If you are not yet part of this community, we warmly invite you to apply to join us as a reviewer here. For further details about reviewing with MDPI, please also visit our Guidelines for Reviewers, where you will find information on reviewer responsibilities, ethics, and the peer review process.
We also encourage you to subscribe to the Reviewer Club series to receive the latest updates and notifications about upcoming sessions by visiting this link. Each edition will spotlight a different discipline, creating opportunities to learn across fields and continue strengthening the role of peer review together.

Journey of the Reviewer
Born in Vilnius on November 11, 1983. Interested in the research of various living creatures from a young age. In 2002, he graduated from the Jonas Basanavičius School and started bachelor studies (Molecular Biology) in the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Vilnius University. In 2008, he obtained a master's degree in biology and started PhD studies that successfully ended in 2013 with a dissertation defense procedure, after which he obtained a PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences, Ecology and Environmental Sciences (provided by the Ecology and Environmental Research Council of Vilnius University and the Nature Research Centre (NRC)). Since then, he has been working as a scientist in the Laboratory of Molecular Ecology of NRC. The current main research areas and interests are fish, especially European eel and Eurasian perch; population genetics; and theoretical investigation and synthesis of population genetic structure and its links with other population structures and microevolution, especially within the context of anthropogenic activity.

The Peer Review Process in Scientific Publishing: How It Works and What It Feels Like
Dr. Adrijana Leonardi is a researcher in the field of toxinology at the Jožef Stefan Institute in the Department of Molecular and Biomedical Sciences, where she heads a proteomics laboratory. Her work focuses on the study of the biological activity, structure, and mechanisms of action of toxins derived from natural sources such as animal venoms. Her research has contributed significantly to the characterization of novel toxins from snake venoms that can be used in medicine, particularly molecules that affect blood clotting. She has advanced the understanding of how specific toxins interact with cellular targets, including ion channels, receptors, and enzymes, and has helped to unravel their role in pathological conditions and their therapeutic and biotechnological potential. Through proteomics, her interdisciplinary research brings together fields such as biochemistry, nanotechnology, biotechnology, and ecology. In addition to her research activities, Dr. Leonardi is an assistant professor at the Biotechnical Faculty and a mentor for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
