Welcome from the Chair
Welcome to the 1st session of MDP’s World Kidney Day 2026 Webinar.
The theme of World Kidney Day 2026, “Kidney Health for All: Caring for People, Protecting the Planet,” highlights the urgent need to advance prevention, early detection, and equitable access to kidney care, while also addressing the environmental impact of kidney disease and its treatments. Climate-related risks such as air pollution, heat stress, and dehydration are increasingly linked to kidney disease, and the resource-intensive nature of some therapies underscores the importance of more sustainable healthcare practices.
In this webinar, leading experts from research, clinical practice, and public health will share insights and strategies to improve kidney health outcomes across diverse populations. The session aims to foster collaboration, raise awareness, and support actions that protect both people and the planet through more equitable and sustainable kidney care.

Prof. Dr. Kunitoshi Iseki: "For patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD)CKD patients, management of lifestyle, such as maintaining a healthy, diverse diet, engaging in physical activity, cessation of tobacco use, and maintaining an adequate body mass index, is essential. These changes should be implemented gradually, in collaboration with healthcare workers or renal dieticians. In addition, maintaining good sleep hygiene is recommended as part of comprehensive lifestyle management."
Dr. Jing Miao:" Early diagnosis of acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) is crucial. Clinicians should maintain a low threshold for suspecting AIN, particularly in patients with unexplained increases in creatinine and a history of medication exposure. Management involves discontinuation of the offending drug, treatment of the underlying cause, and consideration of early steroid therapy, especially in drug-induced AIN."
Dr. Yoshifumi Saisho: "Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is characterized by insulin resistance and insufficient insulin secretion. However, these two factors are not independent but rather affect each other. This mutual effect could be more easily understood if we considered diabetes from the perspective of the pancreatic beta cell. This approach is referred to as the “beta cell-centric” concept of diabetes, and it discusses the paradigm shift from “glucose-lowering” to “beta cell protection” for the optimal management of T2D. Please also watch our YouTube video at Beyond glucose: A beta-cell centric approach to prevent type 2 diabetes."
