10th Medicina Webinar

Onco-Surgical Approach to Peritoneal Malignancies — When, How, and to Whom?

Dear colleagues,

It is an honor for us to host this webinar, titled “Onco-surgical approach to peritoneal malignancies—when, how, and to whom?”, on behalf of Medicina.

This webinar aims to offer a comprehensive overview of surgical procedures intending to cure both primary peritoneal malignancies and peritoneal metastases (mainly from ovarian and digestive cancers). Since these patients need a multidisciplinary approach to significantly prolong their lives, experienced surgeons and oncologists will join this meeting to discuss the updates in onco-surgical management of these patients. Beyond current therapeutic standards, the speakers will present updated evidence about unresolved issues such as the use of HIPEC, the optimal extent of cytoreductive surgery, its specific indications, and the best timing of the surgery with respect to systemic chemotherapy.

This webinar is addressed not only to surgeons and oncologists, but also to the gastroenterologists, gynecologists, pathologists, and general practitioners, because the recent advances in this field have dramatically improved the survival of such patients considered until recently as candidates for palliative therapy alone.

Date: 28 January 2025

Time: 4:00 PM CET | 10:00 AM EDT | 11:00 PM CST (Asia)

Webinar ID: 898 3237 0697

Webinar Secretariat: journal.webinar@mdpi.com

Introduction
Bio
Dr. Alexandrescu is a consultant in General Surgery, specializing in HPB Surgery as well as in Oncologic Surgery. Presently, he is the head of the HPB Surgery Department at the Emergency University Hospital, Bucharest, Romania. He has performed more than 2000 procedures for digestive cancers, almost half of them being colorectal resections. Consequently, he has performed hundreds of liver resections for colorectal liver metastases and treated many patients with peritoneal metastases of colorectal origin. Because of the favorable outcomes reported with cytoreductive surgery (CRS) in such patients during the last decade and thanks to his experience achieved in almost 100 procedures for advanced ovarian cancer, during the last few years, he has also developed a special interest in the surgical approach to colorectal peritoneal metastases. Of the almost 150 papers he has published, more than 25 are dedicated to the topic of colorectal metastases, either hepatic or peritoneal.

Her clinical and research activity is focused on peritoneal and liver metastases, with a high yearly volume of cytoreductive procedures. In the treatment of peritoneal malignancies, she is experienced with various techniques such as HIPEC, PIPAC, and IP. She is the principal investigator of a phase I (NIPOX) and a phase II randomized trial (MESOTIP) and an associated investigator in many other trials. She was appointed ESPSO (European School of Peritoneal Surface Oncology) mentor after being an international trainer in cytoreductive surgery, HIPEC, and PIPAC on different continents. She currently serves as the vice-president of the SFCO (Francophone Society of Surgical Oncology) and a board member of RENAPE (French National Network of Peritoneal Malignancies) and of the Educational and Training Committee of ESSO. Updates in Onco-Surgical Management of Peritoneal Metastases of Gastrointestinal Malignancies
Bio
Dr. Razvan Grigorie is a consultant in General Surgery, with a specialization in oncologic, hepatobiliary, and liver transplantation surgery, and he has participated in and performed a variety of surgical interventions on oncological cases. These include cases of peritoneal carcinomatosis primarily originating from digestive and ovarian cancers, as well as rare instances of primary peritoneal cancers or goblet cell carcinoma. He has also conducted numerous liver resections for liver metastases, predominantly from colorectal cancers. In select cases, the consultant has extended the boundaries of surgical intervention to include oligometastatic liver involvement in gastric or pancreatic cancer, and certain colorectal cancer cases with limited peritoneal carcinomatosis amenable to CCR0 resection. Additionally, the consultant has performed and attended numerous liver transplantation procedures, many of which were indicated for oncological reasons such as hepatocellular carcinoma and rare cases of hemangioendothelioma. The consultant has a specific interest in minimally invasive surgery and is keenly interested in clinical and translational research as well as medical education.
