Watching Metals Deform: In-Situ Experiments that Reveal,the Invisible

Understanding how metals deform is essential for designing stronger, lighter, and more reliable materials. Many of the processes that control deformation take place deep within the material and cannot be observed directly with conventional techniques. This webinar introduces advanced in situ experimental methods that make these hidden mechanisms visible in real time. Special attention will be given to the use of acoustic emission (AE) and modern diffraction techniques, including neutron and X-ray diffraction, for monitoring active deformation processes. Participants will learn how these methods provide complementary information on microstructural evolution during mechanical loading. The webinar will demonstrate how combining AE with diffraction enables the collection of datasets with both high statistical relevance and excellent spatial and temporal resolution. Examples will illustrate how individual deformation events can be detected, characterized, and linked to specific microstructural changes. The correlation of these data with real-time and post-mortem microscopy will also be presented. Through selected case studies, the strengths and limitations of the different approaches will be discussed. The webinar offers valuable insights for researchers and engineers interested in advanced characterization of metallic materials and their deformation behavior.

Prof. Dr. Kristian Mathis

Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic;Kristián Máthis is a Professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague, and serves as Head of the Department of Physics of Materials. He earned a Ph.D. in Solid State Physics from Charles University in 2003 and a Ph.D. in Materials Science from Eötvös Loránd University in 2004. His research focuses on investigating the deformation mechanisms of metallic materials using advanced in situ experimental techniques. These methods include acoustic emission, neutron and X-ray diffraction, and real-time microscopy. Through his work, he seeks to deepen the understanding of microstructural evolution and mechanical behavior in metals under deformation. His research contributes to the development of advanced materials with improved performance and reliability.

Prof. Dr. Alexey Vinogradov

Kumamoto University, Kumamoto City, Japan;Alexey Vinogradov has specialized in acoustic emission signal processing, data mining, strain hardening, failure analysis and fracture prediction since 1985. He received his PhD in Physics and Mathematics from the A.F. Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute, St. Petersburg, USSR, in 1988, and a Doctor of Engineering degree from Kyoto University in 1997. He has held several academic positions in Japan and Norway. Since 2023, AV has served as a Distinguished Professor at the Institute of Light Alloys, Kumamoto University, Japan.

Dr. Jan Čapek

Dr. Jan Čapek

Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic;Jan Čapek is an Assistant Professor at Charles University in Prague. His research focuses on deformation-induced phase transformations, twinning, texture evolution, and residual stresses in advanced metallic materials. He combines in-situ synchrotron and neutron diffraction with EBSD, mechanical testing, and MTEX-based modelling to investigate TRIP and TWIP mechanisms in steels and additively manufactured alloys. Before joining Charles University, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland, where he specialized in neutron diffraction and materials characterization under in-situ loading conditions.

Dr. Gerardo Garcés

National Centre for Metallurgical Research CENIM-CSIC, Madrid, Spain;Dr. Gerardo Garcés is a Senior Research Scientist at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and Leader of the MANOEQ research group at the National Center for Metallurgical Research (CENIM-CSIC). He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the Complutense University of Madrid in 2001 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research in Stuttgart. His research focuses on the design, processing, and microstructural characterization of advanced metallic materials, with a particular emphasis on magnesium, zinc, and high-entropy alloys for structural and bio-applications. He specializes in advanced characterization techniques, including in situ synchrotron radiation diffraction and electron microscopy (TEM/EBSD), to elucidate deformation mechanisms and phase transformations. Dr. Garcés has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles (h-index: 32, >3,700 citations) and has led or participated in more than 30 public and industrial R&D projects. He serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Magnesium and Alloys, regularly acts as a reviewer and project evaluator for national and international funding agencies, and maintains extensive academic collaborations with leading research centers across Europe, Asia and America.

Nuclear Physics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Řež, Czech Republic;Dr. Gergely Farkas has been working as a Researcher at the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Řež, Czech Republic, from 2012 to present. He worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, Hungary, between 2017 and 2018. He earned his PhD from Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic, in 2017.
