Welcome from the Chair
23rd Molecules Webinar
Industrial Hemp Chemistry and Nutraceutical Perspectives
The renewed interest in the no-drug type of Cannabis sativa L. is the basis of new sustainable and innovative value chains. Food, nutraceutical, and cosmeceutical sectors benefit from the bioactive components from the fruit and other plant organs, as well as from the by-products and wastes from hemp seed processing.
The Webinar deals with the deep investigation of hemp chemistry as a key issue to pursue, not only to provide a proper revival of ancient but overlooked/unknown food usages but, above all, to ensure the bioactivity and effectiveness of hemp’s unique and diverse phytochemicals.
Date: 16 November 2021
Time: 9:30am CET | 3:30am EST | 4:30pm CST Asia

Chair
Department of Environmental, Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies, University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, Caserta, Italy
Severina Pacifico is currently Associate Professor of Food Chemistry at the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, where she is Head of the Degree Course in Food Science and Human Nutrition. Her research activity, which mainly deals with the chemistry of bioactive natural products from food and medicinal plants, resulted in more than 150 publications in peer-reviewed international journals (h-index 32, Scopus—October 2021), chapters in international books, and communications in national and international conferences. Her interest in hemp is devoted to obtaining new insights in the chemistry of plant parts and/or hemp seed processing residual materials for nutraceuticals and/or cosmeceuticals perspectives. Prof. Pacifico is member of Editorial Board of the Journals Foods, and Molecules (Natural Products Section).
Invited Speakers
Dipartimento Scienze della Vita, Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia, Italy
Federica Pellati is an Associate Professor in Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy). Her research is dedicated to the study of Cannabis sativa L. for its composition in both cannabinoids and terpenes and to the investigation of its biological activity in hyper-proliferative disorders and chronic diseases, including neuropathic pain and epilepsy. She is the author of more than 90 papers in international scientific journals (h-index = 29 from Scopus), 2 patents, and more than 90 congress communications. She is an editorial board member for many international journals in the area of pharmaceutical and phytochemical analysis, including Antioxidants, the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, Molecules, Antibiotics, the Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis, and Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research.
Department of Environmental, Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies, University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, Caserta, Italy
Simona Piccolella (Dr. PhD) is a Researcher of Food Chemistry at the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”. Her research activity is mainly devoted to the chemical characterization of bioactive molecules from medicinal and food plant sources by spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques, to metabolic profiling/fingerprinting through HPLC/MS and/or UHPLC/HRMS tools, and to the in-vitro evaluation of the antioxidant, cytotoxic and chemopreventive properties of natural products. Currently, the research activity resulted in 78 published papers in peer-reviewed international journals (1276 citations, h index 21, source: Scopus) and 2 book chapters, in addition to a number of communications in national and international conferences. Furthermore, she is or has been Guest Editor for the Special Issues in Molecules: “Food Bioactives: Chemical Challenges and Bio-Opportunities”; “Food Bioactives: Chemical Challenges and Bio-Opportunities 2nd ed”; and “Bioactives and Functional Ingredients in Foods”.
Department of Environmental, Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies, University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, Caserta, Italy
Dr. Marialuisa Formato graduated in Pharmacy at the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, discussing a thesis in Food Chemistry entitled “Phenolamides and lignanamides from hempseed: UHPLC-ESI-QqTOF-MS/MS analysis and cytotoxicity”. Her research activity, which focuses on the extraction and chemical characterization of plant matrices exploitable for recovering bioactive ingredients for human and animal nutrition in livestock production, resulted in publications in peer-reviewed international journals. The features of HR-MS/MS to unravel chemical determinants for differentiating CBD-, THC-, and CBC-type phytocannabinoids are part of her interest in hemp chemistry.
Department of Environmental, Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies, University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, Caserta, Italy
Dr. Maria Tommasina Pecoraro graduated in Pharmacy at the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, and actually she is working at ETHoS project (nutra- and cosmeceutical hemp seed), which concerns the environmental aspects of the cultivation and processing of hemp in Southern Italy. Her research activity focuses on the careful chemical study of bioactive compounds from seed and other plant organs, as well as from by-products and wastes of food hemp production to establish new formulas for skincare. Dr. Pecoraro’s research has resulted in five publications in peer-reviewed international journals, communications, and chairman in international conferences.
Webinar Content
On Tuesday, 16 November 2021, MDPI and the Journal Molecules organized the 23rd webinar on Molecules. The webinar was chaired by Prof. Dr. Severina Pacifico from the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, Italy, and gave an overview on “Industrial Hemp Chemistry and Nutraceutical Perspectives”.
The renewed interest of the scientific community towards industrial hemp has favoured the development of project activities that gave strength to the hemp sector. The multiplicity of the hemp use for applications even far from those health-related is due to its being an endless reservoir of bioactive molecules, whose molecular and functional diversity is not fully understood. Coming back to the past for an active future in the nutraceutical food sector requires a great effort that starts from the chemistry of hemp, its products, and its wastes for the structuring of a highly exploitable and sustainable supply chain for daily life and well-being.
The first speaker to kick off the webinar was Prof. Dr. Federica Pellati who presented the uses of non-psychoactive hemp against human chronic diseases. Dr. Simona Piccolella followed with her talk on hemp seed bioactive polyphenols. Dr. Marialuisa Formato then gave a presentation on cannabidiolic acid and, finally, Dr. Maria Tommasina Pecoraro showed the nutri-cosmeceutical applications of hemp.
The webinar was offered via Zoom, and registration was required for attendance. The full recording can be found below. To stay updated on upcoming Molecules webinars organized by MDPI, be sure to sign up for our newsletter by clicking on “Subscribe” at the top of the page.
