Terahertz (THz) radiation, operating in the 0.1–10 THz frequency range, is attracting increasing interest as a non-destructive sensing technology. THz waves can penetrate materials that are opaque to visible and infrared radiation, including varnish, paint, plaster, paper, wood, and plastics, enabling high-resolution imaging of surface and shallow subsurface features of the object under test. As a non-ionizing technique, THz imaging offers negligible long-term risks to both investigated materials and operators. Recent advances in compact, flexible commercial systems, with source and detector probes connected by optical fibers and requiring no complex optical alignment, further enhance its applicability. Measurement configurations can be, indeed readily adapted to survey requirements, allowing transmission, normal-reflection, and oblique-reflection measurements.
In this webinar, Dr. Ilaria Catapano will introduce the fundamentals of THz imaging and provide an overview of its applications, with particular emphasis on the investigation and conservation of artworks, especially paintings, as well as biomedical applications.

He was General Chair of ICARS 2025 and the SPT4GPRA workshops, and his honours include the EGU ECSs Award and several Best Paper Awards. He is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of NDT (MDPI), an Associate Editor for leading journals, and an Expert Evaluator for the European Commission’s Horizon programmes.
Institute for Electromagnetic Sensing of the Environment (IREA), National Research Council of Italy (CNR), Naples, Italy;Dr. Ilaria Catapano, Research Director at the National Research Council of Italy (CNR), received the PhD degree in Electric and Information Engineering from the University of Cassino, Italy, in 2006. In 2003, she started her research activity at the CNR - Institute for Electromagnetic Sensing of the Environment (IREA). Her research interests lie in applied electromagnetism, data processing and image interpretation. She is skilled in electromagnetic modelling and in solving forward and inverse scattering problems. She is also experienced in using remote and in situ microwave and TeraHertz (THz) sensing techniques. Dr. Catapano’s main research topics regard: (a) radar imaging with focus on processing of experimental data gathered by means of ground-based, airborne and drone radar systems; (b) THz spectroscopy and imaging; (c) measurement campaigns carried out by means of microwave and THz devices; (d) development of high-frequency radar systems and data processing strategies for target detection and tracking as well as vital signs monitoring; (e) use of microwaves and THz for food inspections, medical imaging and planetary explorations. She participates/has participated in several national and international projects, often taking a leading role. She has co-authored more than 200 papers in scientific journals and international conference proceedings; she is a reviewer for several international journals and conferences as well as national projects.
