27th Nutrients Webinar

Women's Muscular and Skeletal Health

It is a pleasure to welcome you to this webinar linked to the Special Issue dedicated to the intricate interplay between the endocrine system, skeletal muscle, and metabolic regulation. Growing evidence highlights the central role of the endocrine system in modulating metabolic processes, influencing substrate utilization, energy homeostasis, and adaptive responses to physical activity. Understanding how hormonal networks orchestrate these mechanisms is fundamental to advancing both performance optimization and long-term metabolic health.

The impact of gender on skeletal muscle physiology is increasingly recognized, with sex-related differences largely attributed to distinct hormonal profiles. In recent years, skeletal muscle has emerged not only as a target of endocrine regulation but also as an active endocrine organ itself. The secretion of myokines during muscle contraction represents a crucial mechanism through which exercise exerts systemic effects. These exercise-induced mediators influence metabolic control, inflammation, insulin sensitivity, and cross-talk with other organs, positioning myokines as key modulators of exercise-induced adaptations.

Equally important is the accurate evaluation of muscular function, which remains essential for understanding both performance outcomes and health-related adaptations. Comprehensive assessment of muscular fitness (i.e., strength, power, endurance) allows for a deeper interpretation of endocrine–metabolic interactions and their functional consequences. Integrating physiological, biochemical, and functional measurements will be crucial to advance research and clinical practice in this field.

This webinar aims to explore gender differences in skeletal muscle health, with particular emphasis on endocrine regulation, metabolic processes, myokine-mediated adaptations, and the evaluation of muscular function. By addressing these interconnected themes, we seek to foster a comprehensive understanding of how hormonal balance and targeted exercise–nutrition interventions can optimize skeletal muscle health across the lifespan, particularly in women.
