Exploring the Key to Healthy Cardiac Metabolism: Managing Diet, Nutrients, and Lifestyle Choices
Dear Colleagues,
It is a pleasure to welcome you to this webinar linked to our Special Issue dedicated to “Nutrition, Lifestyle, and Cardiac Metabolism.”
The growing global burden of cardiovascular disease highlights the urgent need to better understand how dietary patterns and lifestyle behaviors influence cardiac metabolism and overall heart health. Emerging research continues to demonstrate that key nutrients—such as omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and dietary fiber—play a fundamental role in reducing inflammation, improving lipid profiles, and supporting vascular function. At the same time, excessive consumption of processed foods, refined sugars, and saturated fats has been strongly associated with metabolic disorders, including obesity, insulin resistance, and atherosclerosis. Beyond nutrition, lifestyle factors such as physical activity, stress management, sleep quality, and avoidance of smoking and excessive alcohol intake are increasingly recognized as critical modulators of cardiometabolic health.
This webinar aims to explore the complex interplay between nutrition, metabolism, and cardiovascular function. We seek to highlight current advances in research, discuss evidence-based dietary and lifestyle strategies, and identify future directions for improving cardiac health and preventing disease. Key themes will include the role of specific nutrients and dietary patterns, mechanisms linking metabolism to cardiovascular outcomes, and the impact of holistic lifestyle interventions on long-term heart health.
We hope this session will foster meaningful discussion and collaboration, contributing to a deeper understanding of how integrated nutritional and lifestyle approaches can optimize cardiometabolism and support cardiovascular well-being.
Thank you for joining us, and we look forward to an engaging and insightful webinar.

1st Cardiology Clinic, Hippokration Hospital, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece
Dr. Christina Chrysohoou is an Assistant Professor of Cardiology-Heart Failure at the First Cardiology Clinic, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, based at Hippokration General Hospital in Athens, Greece. Her clinical and research work focuses on heart failure, cardiovascular imaging, preventive cardiology, and the epidemiology of aging. She has played a leading role in major epidemiological studies, including the ATTICA study and the IKARIA study on longevity. She is a Board member of the Hellenic Society of Cardiology, a Board member of the MCQ writing committee, and Head of the Heart Failure and Epidemiology Clinics of the 1st Cardiology Clinic. With an extensive publication record, she is the author of numerous original research and review articles published in international peer-reviewed journals and has delivered over 600 invited talks in epidemiology and heart failure.
1st Cardiology Clinic, Hippokration Hospital, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece
Dr. Christos Fragoulis is a Consultant Cardiologist and Head of the Behavioural Cardiology and Cardiometabolic Units at the First Department of Cardiology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, based at Hippokration General Hospital in Athens. His clinical and research work centers on hypertension, cardiometabolic disease, and behavioural cardiology, with active involvement in specialized units including hypertension and ergospirometry. Dr. Fragoulis has an extensive publication record in international peer-reviewed journals, contributing to research on cardiovascular risk, heart failure, and metabolic disorders. He is also an active member of major European and Hellenic cardiology and Hypertension societies, reflecting his engagement in the broader academic and clinical community.
Keynote Speakers
Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, School of Health Sciences and Education, Harokopio University of Athens, 17676 Athens, Greece
Dr. Evangelia Damigou is a Clinical Dietitian-Nutritionist (RDN, MSc, PhD) and Research Fellow at Harokopio University of Athens, specializing in Nutritional Epidemiology. Her research explores the long-term impact of lifestyle, particularly diet, on cardiovascular disease and related comorbidities. Passionate about obesity prevention, she is an active contributor to the HealthyW8 project through the European Federation of the Associations of Dietitians, helping develop personalized, digital-based lifestyle recommendations. Evangelia is dedicated to making evidence-based nutrition guidance accessible, individualized, and easy to follow for the general population.
Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine, University of Leeds, UK
Dr Giannoudi studied medicine at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. She is currently working as a clinical academic cardiology trainee in Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. Her PhD, focused on characterising diabetic cardiomyopathy using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) and transcriptomics. As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Leeds, she is continuing to integrate transcriptomics and metabolomics with CMR and phosphorus spectroscopy to phenotype a range of cardiac pathologies. Her research aims to improve our understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying heart disease, with a particular focus on sex differences in disease presentation.
Cardiology Depatment, Colentina Clinical Hospital, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Carol Davila, Bucharest, Romania
Dr. Daha studied at the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest (1990-1996). She trained in Internal Medicine and later in Cardiology at the Colentina Clinical Hospital in Bucharest. She earned her Doctorate (PhD) in Medicine, focusing on the interrelations between atherosclerosis and chronic hepatitis C infection. She received training in cardiac rehabilitation and prevention at the University Hospital (Inselspital) in Bern, Switzerland (2012). Dr. Daha is a member of the Romanian Society of Cardiology, a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology, and Head of the Cardiac Amyloidosis Program at the Cardiology Clinic of Colentina Clinical Hospital. She is an author of original research and review articles published in international peer-reviewed journals and has given many invited talks on cardiac prevention, epidemiology, and heart failure.
