Nutritional intervention is a cornerstone is managing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), aiming to regulate blood sugar levels and promote healthy pregnancy outcomes. Individualized dietary plans tailored to the woman's specific needs, emphasizing balanced macronutrients distribution, particularly focusing on carbohydrate intake, and promoting overall healthy eating habits are mandatory in this pathology. However, some debated points are present in the literature on the optimal energy requirements, correct carbohydrate consumption, and correct weight gain during pregnancy. The aim of this webinar is to focus on the points still debated and also on the importance of nutrigenetics.
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the most common metabolic disorder in pregnancy and results from the interplay genetic predisposition, nutritional factors, lifestyle, and maternal clinical characteristics. Increasing evidence suggests that maternal nutrition mai influence the development and progression of GDM through complex interactions between dietary exposures and maternal genetic background. Nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics provide valuable insights into how genetic variability influences the response to nutrients and how dietary factors may modulate gene expression and metabolic pathways. Moreover, epigenetic mechanisms may mediate the effects of maternal nutrition, environmental exposures, and hyperglycemia on fetal metabolic programming, potentially influencing the offspring's long-term risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other non-communicable disease. A better understanding of these mechanisms may pave the way for personalized nutritional strategies aimed at preventing GDM and mitigating its short-and long-term metabolic consequences for both mothers and their offspring.
