Therapeutic Potential of Silver Nanoparticles

The main purpose of this webinar is to present some novel advances in the use of silver-based materials for therapy. Silver nanoparticles have gained significant attention in the field of biomedicine, primarily for their antimicrobial properties. However, these versatile nanoparticles are now emerging as multifaceted therapeutic agents capable of being used to address a wide range of diseases. AgNPs exhibit size- and shape-dependent properties, allowing them to be tailored for specific applications.

This webinar will include presentations from Dr. Goreti Pereira (University of Aveiro, Portugal), Dr. Jermy Rabindran (Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), and Dr. Debbie Crans (Colorado State University, United States of America).

Dr. B. Rabindran Jermy

Dr. Rabindran Jermy is an Associate Professor at the Institute for Research and Medical Consultations (IRMC), Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University (IAU). His research focuses on the design and development of nanomaterials, with particular emphasis on mesoporous and zeolite-based systems for petrochemical and biomedical applications. With more than 17 years of experience, he has developed several porous materials, including AlZAT, IAUM-56, and demetallized ZrZSM-5. Dr. Jermy has contributed to multiple industry-relevant projects with leading organizations such as Saudi Aramco and UOP during his tenure as a research scientist at the Center for Refining and Petrochemicals (CRP), KFUPM. He holds 25 U.S. patents and has published numerous scientific articles, maintaining an h-index of 36.

Debbie C. Crans is a University Distinguished Professor in the Chemistry Department and the Cell and Molecular Biology Program at Colorado State University (CSU) in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA. She was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and received her initial degree in Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry from the University of Copenhagen, working with James P. Snyder. She received her Ph.D. from Harvard University, working with George M. Whitesides, and completed postdoctoral studies with Orville L. Chapman and Paul D. Boyer at the University of California, Los Angeles. She started as an Assistant Professor in Organic chemistry with expertise in biological, organic, and inorganic chemistry in January 1987 at CSU. She has been working to understand the mode of action of drugs as well as approaches to improve them using the synthesis of new compounds, spectroscopy to characterize the systems, structural approaches, biological assays to test their activities, and other methods as needed, such as nanoparticles for drug delivery systems. Currently she is particularly interested in metals in medicine, enzymes in signal transduction with effects in cancer, diabetes, tuberculosis, and substance use disorder, as well as in the electron transport pathway in bacteria.

Dr. Goreti Pereira

Dr. Goreti Pereira

Chemistry Department and CESAM, University of Aveiro, 3800-724 Aveiro, Portugal;
Goreti Pereira obtained a PhD in Sciences, with Specialty in Chemistry (2012), from the University of Minho (Portugal). In October 2022, she joined the Department of Chemistry and CESAM of the University of Aveiro (UA, Portugal) as an assistant researcher. Her research focuses on developing quantum dots (QDs) and metallic nanoparticles (NPs) prepared in aqueous media for biomedical and environmental applications. These include diagnostic tools, therapeutic agents, sensors, and catalysts. Her research has been also focused on minimizing the environmental impact of the preparation of QDs and NPs, applying synthetic procedures aligned with green chemistry principles.

The 6th Pharmaceuticals webinar provided an overview of key advancements in pharmaceutical sciences, with a spotlight on silver-based nanoparticles for cancer therapy, diabetes management, and phototherapy. It featured discussions on nanoparticle design strategies to tackle contemporary therapeutic challenges. This event counted on the collaboration of Dr. Rabindran Jermy, Dr. Debbie C.
