Personalized Drug Therapy: The Role of Pharmacokinetics and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring

Welcome to the webinar on Personalized Drug Therapy: The Role of Pharmacokinetics and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring. Personalized medicine has gradually changed how we interpret and manage pharmacological therapy in recent years. In this scenario, clinical pharmacokinetics and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) play a pivotal role in guiding treatment choices based on the characteristics of each patient, definitively dispelling the notion that ‘one dose fits all.’ The development of more complex pharmacokinetic and pharmacometric approaches, coupled with an increasing number of bioanalytical technologies, presents new opportunities in tailored therapy, allowing for optimal efficacy, safety, and management of drug interactions even in complicated clinical settings.
The scope of this webinar is to explore the application of TDM in precision pharmacotherapy and its practical uses. We are pleased to welcome three renowned speakers who will share their scientific and clinical experience, providing an up-to-date and multidisciplinary perspective on the topic. We believe that this symposium will stimulate scientific conversation by generating new ideas, collaborations, and perspectives in the field of personalized therapy.
Speakers:
Dr. Bruno Charlier, University Hospital of Salerno, Italy
Prof. Dr. Antonio D'Avolio, University of Turin, Italy
Prof. Dr. Baralee Punyawudho, Chiang Mai University, Thailand
We hope that this webinar will stimulate insightful discussions and inspire future collaborations.

Introduction
Bio
Prof. Viviana Izzo received her degree in Biology in 2000 and her PhD in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Biology in 2004 from the University Federico II of Naples (Italy). From 2004 to 2006 she was appointed as postdoctoral research fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, Cambridge, USA), under the supervision of prof. S.J. Lippard, at the Department of Chemistry. In 2006, prof. Izzo was appointed as Assistant Professor in Biochemistry at the Faculty of Biotechnological Sciences, University of Naples Federico II, where she has worked until December 2011. From 01/01/2012 to 29/02/2020, Dr. Izzo has been Assistant Professor in Biochemistry at the Department of Medicine, Surgery and Dentistry of the University of Salerno (Italy). Currently, prof. Izzo's research activities focus on the following topics: i) analysis of the pharmacokinetic behavior of bioactive molecules in patients undergoing pharmacological therapies, iii) development and validation of bioanalytical methods in mass spectrometry coupled with liquid chromatography and their application in the clinical field, and iv) biological and environmental monitoring of subjects professionally exposed to the use of toxic xenobiotics. Since 2012, Professor Izzo has been responsible for an healthcare activity project at the University Hospital San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona in Salerno where she holds the role of co-responsible for the Pharmacokinetics and Toxicology Laboratory of the Operative Unit of Clinical Pharmacology. Prof. Izzo benefits of national and international collaborations, is referee for several international scientific journals of biochemistry, pharmacology, biotechnology and applied microbiology.

Introduction
Bio
Dr. Charlier graduated in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology in 2008 at the University of Salerno. There, he obtained the postgraduate specialization in hospital pharmacy with honors in 2019 and a PhD in Translational Medicine in 2023. Dr. Charlier developed new azole-based molecular scaffolds for the synthesis and purification of non-steroidal inhibitors of the Aromatase enzyme (CYP19) while working on his thesis at the University of Salerno's Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He worked as a visiting scientist at the National Research Council's (CNR) Institute of Biomedicine and Molecular Immunology (IBIM) in Palermo in 2009. There, he developed knowledge in molecular biology techniques, such as gene sequencing, real-time PCR, and nucleic acid extraction, with an emphasis on the implementation of analytical protocols for the study of Anderson–Fabry disease. He worked as an analyst at the University Hospital's Molecular Biology Laboratory for Infectious Diseases in Salerno from 2010 to 2014. His work focuses on virological and genetic analysis and development of in-house protocols for real-time PCR and gene sequencing. From 2015 to 2020, Dr. Charlier oversaw the Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology division of the “Biochemical s.r.l.” analysis laboratory in Salerno. Dr. Charlier started a collaboration with the Clinical Pharmacology Unit of the University Hospital of Salerno in 2015. His work focuses on the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and bioaccumulation of drugs, as well as developing novel methods for pharmacologic and toxicologic applications. From 2023, he has been a pharmacist manager in the Clinical Pharmacology Unit.

Department of Medical Sciences, University of Turin, Italy

Introduction
Bio
Prof. D’Avolio is a clinical pharmacologist and Head of the Laboratory of Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacogenetics at Amedeo di Savoia Hospital and ASL Città di Torino. His research focuses on the clinical pharmacology and pharmacogenetics of anti-infective agents, oncology drugs, monoclonal antibodies, antihypertensive therapies, and iron chelators, with particular emphasis on therapeutic drug monitoring, personalized medicine, and pharmacokinetic evaluation. He has extensive experience in translating pharmacogenetic findings into clinical practice and routinely oversees diagnostic analyses for therapeutic drug monitoring and genetic testing. Over the course of his career, he has collaborated with numerous national and international research centers, contributing to advances in clinical pharmacology and related diagnostics. Since 1994, he has delivered more than 400 presentations at scientific meetings, authored or co-authored over 400 international scientific publications, and achieved an H-index of 47 on Google Scholar and 41 on Scopus, reflecting his significant impact on the field.

Introduction
Bio
Associate Professor Baralee Punyawudho, Ph.D., currently serves in the Department of Pharmaceutical Care at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Chiang Mai University. She earned her B.Sc. in Pharmacy with Second Class Honors from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand and Ph.D. from the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Minnesota, USA. Her research centers on dose optimization through population pharmacokinetics, especially of antiretroviral (ARV) agents. By integrating population pharmacokinetic modeling with patient covariates, including specific genetic polymorphisms, her work aims to systematically evaluate and redefine dosing strategies. The goal of this research is to establish evidence-based, optimized ARV regimens tailored to the unique physiological, pharmacokinetic, and genetic profiles of Thai and Asian populations, thereby maximizing therapeutic efficacy while minimizing toxicity. In recognition of her academic and professional excellence, Dr. Punyawudho was honored with The Nagai Award Thailand in 2018.
