EOR of Unconventional Reservoirs—Experimental, Simulation and Modeling, and Field Implementation
Unconventional resources have transformed the landscape of the oil and gas industry. The primary oil recovery factor ranges from 4 to 8% for the various shale plays across the United States, and it is imperative that we develop the vast potential of unconventional reservoirs and increase these recovery factors beyond primary depletion by implementing IOR/EOR methods. This webinar will focus on the role of effective reservoir management and will address industry experiences in experimental work, modeling and simulation, and the field implementation of IOR/EOR technologies applied to unconventional reservoirs. All industry experts are welcome to participate and share their experiences so that we can collectively advance EOR techniques for unconventional reservoirs.

Experimental Studies in Unconventional Reservoirs
Dr. Lori Hathon was a senior research geologist for Shell International E&P, Inc. before she joined the UH Cullen College faculty. For more than two decades, her work has focused on routine and special core analysis, clastic petrology, reservoir quality analysis and predictive modeling, applications of image analysis to rock physics, organic petrography, and thermal maturity analysis. Her experience has also included well-drilling operations and post-well appraisals.

Enhanced Oil Recovery in Unconventional Reservoirs: From Lab to Field
Dr. Johannes Alvarez is a Senior Reservoir and Production Engineer with several years of industry and research experience. He has technical expertise and a proven record in cross-functional pilot research, asset development, improved oil recovery (IOR), and EOR processes in Unconventional, Heavy Oil, and Conventional reservoirs. He has held leadership positions in Production Engineering, Pilot Development, and Strategic Planning. He received his PhD in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M University, his MSc from Stanford University, and his BSc from Universidad Simon Bolivar, both in Chemical Engineering. He additionally completed a Certificate Program in Project Management from UC Berkeley. He has authored several journal articles and technical papers on IOR/EOR in Unconventional and Heavy Oil Reservoirs. He has had a long service record with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), demonstrating technical leadership as the chairperson for various committees at international conferences such as URTeC, SPE PBEC, SPE ATCE, SPE LACPEC, and the World Petroleum Congress (WPC). He is an Industry Board Member for the Texas A&M University Petroleum Engineering Department and is the Current Enhanced Oil Recovery Manager of the Shale and Tight Business at Chevron Upstream. Dr. Alvarez was recognized as a 2025-2026 SPE Distinguished Lecturer.
