Rethinking Polymer Flooding Design: New Insights, Best Practices, and Field Applications

Welcome to this webinar hosted by the Journal of Process (MDPI). It is our honor to host presentations from three EOR pioneers in the field of polymer flooding research and application from three different countries. They are Dr. Seright, from New Mexico Tech, USA; the CEO of EPPOK, Antoine Thomas, who is from France; and Dr. Madhar from the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia. They will focus on varied topics related to polymer flooding, ranging from fundamentals to practice, to help us to understand the importance of Polymer EOR at present for further improving subsurface energy production efficiency.

Dr. Dongmei Wang

Harold Hamm School of Geology & Geological Engineering University of North Dakota, USA;Dr. Wang is a full professor at the Harold Hamm School of Geology and Geological Engineering at the University of North Dakota (UND). Dongmei’s expertise focuses on the case design, numerical simulation, and core flooding laboratory experiments on Geothermal Sweep Efficiency Improvement and Enhanced Oil Recovery from conventional and unconventional subsurface resources, as well economic evaluation. She had more than twenty years’ experience in 40 projects case design in reservoir engineering, production, and reservoir simulation in oil/gas industry before she joined the University of North Dakota. Since 2009, she has been PIs for multiple research projects funded by DOE, DOE/RPSEA, ND EPSCoR, NDIC, and industries related Geothermal Sweep Efficiency Improvement Studies, Enhanced Oil Recovery from tight rocks from Williston Basin, D-J Basin, Eagle Ford, Heavy Oil in Alaska, and CO-PIs for other research projects including using chemical to remove oils from contaminated soils and Oceanside muds. Recently, she just received a recognition of “Top 2% Scientists, leading minds in Science” of UND.

Dr. Randall Seright

Dr. Randall Seright

PRRC, New Mexico Technology and Mines Institute, USA;Dr. Randy Seright has developed polymer flooding and gels to improve sweep efficiency in reservoirs since 1978, when he started his career with Exxon. He worked at New Mexico Tech for 36.5 years, helping to make polymer flooding and gel treatments more viable. Seright has been involved in many major polymer flooding projects throughout the world, including projects in China, Canada, India, Argentina, Suriname, Kazakhstan, and Alaska (USA). He has provided short courses on Polymer Flooding and Water Shutoff in 19 countries. He received the SPE/DOE IOR Pioneer award in 2008 for his work using polymer and gels to improve oil recovery. He holds a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Montana State University (Bozeman) and a Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin (Madison).

Mr. Antoine Thomas

Mr. Antoine Thomas

EPPOK, France;Antoine Thomas is an independent consultant specializing in enhanced chemical oil recovery (EOR) & conformance. He holds an MSc in Geology, Reservoir, and Petroleum Engineering from ENSG in Nancy, France. Over the past 15 years, Thomas has led the design, implementation, and monitoring of chemical EOR projects across Russia, Argentina, Canada, Kazakhstan, India, and Europe, with particular expertise in polymer flooding, conformance control, and water shut off. He is the author of Essentials of Polymer Flooding Technique (Wiley, 2019) and has published proceedings widely in SPE and EAGE. He regularly teaches training courses on chemical EOR and conformance management and advises companies on EOR strategy. More information is available at polymer-flooding.com.

Dr. Azad Madhar

Petroleum Engineering Department of KFUPM, Saudi Arabia;Dr. Madhar is working as an assistant professor in the Petroleum Engineering Department of KFUPM. He is a recognized expert in reservoir engineering and rheological aspects of polymer EOR and has published several related papers in SPE, including a critical review paper (SPE 195687-PA) and a screening criteria paper (SPE 223155-PA) that resolved a decade-long debate within the polymer EOR community. He is serving as an Associate Editor for SPE and has won several technical awards: a) the 2025 SPE Regional Reservoir Description and Dynamics Award, b) the 2025 SPE Outstanding Associate Editor Award, and c) the SPE Outstanding TE Award (four times) (2021, 2023, 2024, 2025). He holds a PhD, an MS, and a B.Tech in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada; King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; and Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering, Anna University, Chennai, India.
