It is my pleasure to welcome you to this webinar dedicated to strengthening international collaboration on membrane technologies for water and food sustainability. This session brings together researchers who share a common goal: advancing green, science-based solutions through joint research and collaborative funding opportunities, particularly those coordinated through the CYTED Program. We look forward to an engaging exchange of ideas and new opportunities for collaboration.

Prof. Dr. Lourdes Ballinas Casarrubias

Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua, Mexico;Dr. Lourdes Ballinas Casarrubias holds a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry (Membrane Technology) from the Universidad Autónoma de México and completed postdoctoral research at ETSEQ, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Spain. Since 2003 she has been a full-time titular professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua, where she leads research on membrane and adsorption separation processes, polymer-carbon composites, and the valorization of agro-industrial residues (lignin and cellulose derivatives) for water purification. She is a Level II member of Mexico's National System of Researchers (SNI), has authored over 80 JCR-indexed articles (h-index 27) and 2 patents, and has led numerous nationally and internationally funded projects, including collaborations with the CYTED network and the U.S. National Institutes of Health. She currently leads a CONAHCYT project on hollow-fiber membranes and coordinates Ibero-American collaboration efforts.

Prof. Dr. Rosa Isela Ortiz-Basurto

Tecnológico Nacional de México (TecNM-ITTepic), Mexico;Dr. Rosa Isela Ortiz holds a Ph.D. in Agri-Food Process Engineering from the Université de Montpellier, France (2008). She is a Research Professor in the Graduate Program in Food Science at TecNM-ITTepic and Head of the Sustainable Agro-Industrial Innovation Laboratory. Her research focuses on flat-sheet and hollow-fiber polymeric membranes from biopolymers, ultra- and nanofiltration coupled with ultrasound, and spray-drying/microencapsulation of bioactive compounds, with particular emphasis on agave fructans and other agro-industrial by-products. She is a Level II member of Mexico's National System of Researchers, has authored 63 indexed articles, a technical handbook, a compiled book, 11 book chapters, and holds 1 registered patent plus 2 patents pending before the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI). She has led 25 funded projects, 8 with direct technology transfer to industry, and has received recognitions such as the 'Inspiring Woman of the 21st Century' award.

Prof. Dr. Hugo Valdés Riquelme

Universidad Católica del Maule (UCM), Chile;Dr. Hugo Valdés Riquelme holds a Ph.D. in Process Engineering from the Universidad de Santiago de Chile (2011) and has been an Adjunct Professor at the Universidad Católica del Maule since 2011, where he is part of the CISES research group in the Faculty of Engineering Sciences. His research addresses sustainable engineering processes, including membrane module design, membrane distillation for desalination, process modeling and simulation, nature-based solutions, and energy efficiency in industrial processes. He has authored 29 indexed articles and holds 5 patents, and currently leads the Fondecyt Regular project 'Advancing Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Techniques' (2024–2028), which integrates air-gap membrane distillation with graphene oxide membrane modules for NaCl crystallization. He also coordinates the Ibero-American collaboration network for Chile.

Prof. Dr. Ruly Terán Hilares

Universidad Católica de Santa María, Perú;Dr. Ruly Terán Hilares is a Research Professor at the Catholic University of Santa Maria (UCSM), Peru, and Head of the Bioprocess Laboratory. He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Biotechnology from the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. His research focuses on industrial biotechnology, bioprocess engineering, and the sustainable valorization of agro-industrial residues to produce high-value bioproducts. His expertise includes hydrothermal processing, hydrodynamic cavitation, ultrasound-assisted extraction, membrane separation, fermentation, and bioreactor development. He has published more than 70 Scopus-indexed articles, and has supervised undergraduate and graduate research. He has participated in nationally and internationally funded projects.

Prof. Dr. Daniela Soledad Laoretani

Universidad Nacional del Litoral, Argentina;Researcher at INGAR-CONICET-UTN, Argentina, with expertise in process systems engineering, process simulation, optimization, and the development of innovative technologies for the vegetable oil industry. Research focuses on the design and optimization of sustainable processes for the production of vegetable oils, their derivatives and other food, with particular emphasis on alternative extraction solvents, solvent recovery, and the integration of membrane technologies. Work combines process modeling, simulation, and optimization to develop more efficient, sustainable, and economically viable processes agroindustry.

Dr. Lourdes Maria Corrêa Cabral

Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation, Brazil;Lourdes Maria Corrêa Cabral is a Chemical Engineer with a Master's and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from COPPE, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), specializing in membrane separation processes. She is a Senior Researcher at the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), where she works in Food Science and Technology, focusing on the recovery and valorization of agro-industrial co-products and the processing of fruit juices and beverages using membrane technologies and microencapsulation.She has coordinated research projects addressing topics such as the effects of processing on the nutritional, functional, and sensory quality of fruit juices, aroma recovery by pervaporation, and the recovery and valorization of protein and non-protein byproducts from the agroindustrial industries.She is a permanent member of the Graduate Programs in Food Science at UFRJ and Food Science and Technology at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). Throughout her career, she has supervised 46 Master's students, 28 Ph.D. students, and 7 postdoctoral fellows. She has published 161 scientific articles, 23 book chapters, and 3 books.

Dr. Virgínia Martins da Matta

Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation, Brazil;Virgínia Martins da Matta is a Chemical Engineer (Federal University of Bahia, 1986, with a master's degree in Chemical and Biochemical Process Technology (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, 1989) and a doctorate in Food Technology (State University of Campinas, 1999). She is a senior researcher at the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), based at Embrapa Food Technology in Rio de Janeiro, working on Food and Science Technology, with emphasis on fruit processing, membrane separation processes, product development and healthy eating. She has participated in many research projects, both as coordinator and as a member and has published 73 papers in indexed journals, 18 book chapters and 33 Embrapa technical publications. She also acts as a co-supervisor in master's and doctoral programs, in addition to supervising undergraduate research students. She was associate editor of the journal Food and Science Technology in 2011/2012 biennium. She is a member of the SDG working groups of Embrapa, as well as the Internal Technical Committee and the Local Publications Committee of Embrapa Food Technology.

Dr. Oscar Ovalle-Encinia

Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Mexico;Dr. Oscar Ovalle Encinia is a chemical engineering and materials science researcher serving as Visiting Professor in the Department of Process Engineering and Hydraulics at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana–Iztapalapa (UAM-I), Mexico City. He holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering and an M.Sc. in Physics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), as well as a B.Sc. in Physics from Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. His research focuses on advanced materials and membrane-based process intensification for energy and environmental applications, particularly hydrogen production, carbon dioxide capture and separation, mixed ionic–electronic conducting membranes, ceramic–carbonate dual-phase membranes, and high-temperature membrane reactors. He has conducted postdoctoral research at UNAM and Arizona State University, where he worked on membrane reactors for methane reforming, water–gas shift reactions, hydrogen production, and pre-combustion CO2 capture. Dr. Ovalle Encinia has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Membrane Science, Chemical Engineering Journal, Chemical Engineering Science, International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, and Chemical Engineering Research and Design. His work combines experimental membrane development, transport phenomena, reaction engineering, materials characterization, and process modeling. He is a Level I member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers (SNI) and has served on the Early Career Editorial Board of the Journal of Membrane Science. At UAM-I, he also contributes to undergraduate and graduate teaching, student supervision, research project development, and academic collaboration in clean-energy technologies. He currently participates in research initiatives on laboratory-scale membrane reactors for hydrogen production and CO2 capture, strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration between materials science and chemical engineering.

Dr. Carlos Jesús Muvdi Nova

Dr. Carlos Jesús Muvdi Nova

Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia;Carlos Jesús Muvdi Nova is a Full Professor at the School of Chemical Engineering of Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS), Director of the Research Group in Food Science and Technology (CICTA), and a Senior Researcher recognized by MinCiencias; he holds a Ph.D. in Process Engineering from Université Montpellier II, France, and a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Universidad Industrial de Santander, with research focused on the valorization of agro-industrial by-products, process modeling and simulation in food engineering, membrane separation technologies for protein purification, and sustainable process design, while actively fostering international collaborations in Europe and Latin America.
