Welcome Message
Welcome to the MDPI World Environment Day Webinar 2026!
World Environment Day is celebrated annually in June and encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment. To contribute to the fight against climate change, MDPI will be holding a special webinar in conjunction, in line with 2026’s theme, “A Global Call for Climate Action”, whereby the United Nations Environment Programme’s global campaign calls on all of us to step in #NowForClimate and steer a world already in motion.
Register now and join us!

The Triple Crisis in the Mediterranean Sea: Climate Change, Pollution and Biodiversity Loss
Chiara Martino is a marine biologist and researcher at the University of Palermo (Italy), specializing in marine biology, ecotoxicology and the impacts of climate change on Mediterranean coastal ecosystems. Her research focuses on sea urchins as model organisms to investigate how multiple environmental stressors, including marine heatwaves, pollution and emerging contaminants, affect reproductive processes, embryonic development, biomineralization and ecosystem resilience. She combines experimental ecology with cellular, molecular and biochemical approaches to assess organismal responses and understand how stress-induced effects may scale up to population and ecosystem-level consequences. Her work also explores the sustainable valorization of marine biomasses within the framework of the blue economy. Dr. Martino is the scientific lead of the BLUE-MED project, officially endorsed as a UN Ocean Decade Action, and is actively involved in international interdisciplinary collaborations linking marine science, innovation, sustainability and climate adaptation strategies for coastal ecosystems.

Adaptation As Pact-Making: From Pathways to Living Agreements for Climate-Resilient Development
Bruce is a Professor at Massey University, Aotearoa New Zealand. Over the last four decades, he has worked as a policy advisor, consultant planner, and academic, mainly in New Zealand, South Africa, and the USA. His applied research centres on how to make societal choices in turbulent times, with a focus on: Adapting to climate change; natural hazards planning; coastal governance; and collaborative planning and conflict transformation. Bruce has been a Coordinating Lead Author / Author in UNESCO-IOC’s Global Ocean Science Report III (2025-2026); the UN’s Third World Ocean Assessment (2024-2025); the Nexus Report by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (2022-2024); and the IPCC’s AR6 Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (2017-2019) and Working Group II Report on Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability (2019-2022). Bruce works as a ‘critical friend’ with local communities and their governing authorities in the Global North and Global South to chart innovative climate resilient development pathways in turbulent times.
