To celebrate World Space Week, MDPI is delighted to launch a special webinar series featuring industry experts and leading astrophysicists, engineers, and researchers in planetary science, astrobiology, and space architecture.

Guided by the theme of “Living in Space”, our sessions will showcase the latest research, highlight the challenges of habitability beyond Earth, and explore the possibilities of sustaining human life on other planets. By sharing insights and best practices, this series reflects the broader goals of World Space Week: to inspire the next generation, foster international cooperation, demonstrate the benefits of space, and encourage its sustainable use for the future of humanity.

Dr. Alexei Dmitriev

Scobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics, Moscow State University (SINP MSU), Russia;
I am a research scientist at Scobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics at Moscow State University (SINP MSU). One of the main scientific topics of SINP MSU is radiation safety of space flights, including manned near-Earth orbital stations (MIR, ISS) as well as lunar and interplanetary missions. Intense fluxes of high-energy protons, trapped in the inner radiation belt, restrict the apogee of orbital stations. High-energy and relativistic protons, injected during solar eruptive events, cause damage to electronics and additional doses for astronauts in space missions. Galactic cosmic rays produce high background radiation dose in the interplanetary medium, in the Earth’s atmosphere and at the surface of the Moon and Mars. All these effects are responsible for restrictions on living in space.

Prof. Dr. Stefaan Poedts

Department of Mathematics, KU Leuven, Belgium;
Stefaan Poedts is a Full Professor at KU Leuven (Belgium). His Research Areas include Space Weather, Solar Physics and Astrophysics, focusing on numerical simulations of the solar corona, the heliospheric wind and SEP events. He published more than 520 research articles in international peer-reviewed journals. He is the President of the European Space Weather and Space Climate Association since October 2023.

Prof. Dr. Fabrizio Quadrini

Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Italy;
Prof. Fabrizio Quadrini (m), PhD, is full professor of Manufacturing Technologies in the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Rome Tor Vergata. During his career, he collaborated with several industrial partners to design and optimize new processes and products. He has been scientific coordinator in several national and international projects. He is author of about 260 manuscripts accepted in international journals and conferences (202 on Scopus, Hindex =22). He has been member of ASME/MED Manufacturing Processes Technical Committee (MPTC); at present he is Coordinator of the Bachelor in Engineering Sciences, Coordinator of the Space Sustainability Center of the University and EDA’s IF CEED Expert. His main scientific interests deal with laser processing of metals and plastics, forming and machining of metals, composite materials, cellular materials, manufacturing processes, additive manufacturing, smart and shape memory materials, technologies for recycling, smart materials for space application.
