Drones Design and Development

Over the past few decades, the new design, aerodynamics, aeroelasticity, control, manufacturing and flight technologies of unmanned aerial systems (UASs) have been in continuous development. Different studies have been done for the advancement and flight of the UAS by various teams in industrial companies, research institutes and universities in different countries. In addition, latest Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques are being applied to this field. Different consortiums and important large projects are organized to encourage the design and flight of UASs.

At ETS in Canada, the Dr Botez’s team is working on new technologies of morphing wings design and control for the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS-S4 and UAS-S45) from Hydra Technologies in Mexico. In addition, high-level flight simulation, modelling and control methodologies are developed for these UAS-S4 and UAS-S45.

Another project is the Canadian Airspace Modelling (CAM) project, that was developed between Carleton University and the NRC Aerospace Research Centre, for the analysis of air traffic in Canada’s national airspace to develop and fly models for collision risk studies, safe integration of new UASs, advanced air mobility platforms and drones, and future automated Air Traffic Management Systems (ATMs). This project will be presented by Dr Jeremy Laliberte from Carleton University in Canada.

New technologies are being developed in the areas of safety systems for UASs. Among them, we can cite the development of new technologies in the areas of Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD) and Fault/Attack-Tolerant Cooperative Control (FTCC), with the aim to ensure safe operations of UASs. The presentation of these new technologies will be presented by Dr Youmin Zhang from Concordia University in Canada.

Another field of interest for the UAS is the dynamic and aeroelastic behaviour of micro and small flapping wing UAVs (FWUAVs), as well as their trajectory tracking using robust controllers. These interesting concepts in the fields of aeroelasticity and controls are validated through design, manufacturing and tests of flapping drone prototypes. This project will be presented by Dr Douglas Bueno from UNESP in Brazil.

A new tool for adaptive and resilient UAV design for a quadrocopter was developed. The application of this research to the design of more adaptive, resilient and intelligent UAVs will be presented by Dr. Hugo Ynez Badillo from TecNM in Mexico.

Prof. Dr. Ruxandra  Botez

LARCASE-Aeronautical Research Laboratory in Active Control, Avionics and Aeroservoelasticity, Ecole de Technologie Superieure, Montreal, Canada;Prof. Dr. Ruxandra Botez is a Full Professor at ÉTS in Montreal and she is the Founder and Head of the Laboratory of Applied Research in Active Controls, Avionics and AeroServoElasticity LARCASE since 2003. She has been the Holder of the Canada Research Chair since 2011. Ruxandra is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE), Canadian Aeronautical Society Institute (CASI), Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and many other organizations. She is also Foreign Honorary Member of the Romanian Academy. Ruxandra is the Editor-in-Chief of the INCAS Bulletin and Associate Editor of 10 other journals including the Aeronautical Journal. Ruxandra has graduated more than 460 students in her academic career, who worked on her research projects: 30 PhD students, 160 Master’s students (projects and theses) and 300 Internship students. Ruxandra published more than 220 archival original journal articles, 400 conference papers and 7 invited book chapters. Ruxandra and her team have obtained more than 70 awards; she also gave more than 50 invited speaker presentations. Ruxandra’s projects were and are realized in collaboration with international teams from Bombardier, CAE, CMC Electronics, Bell Helicopter Textron, Thales Aerospace, GlobVision, FLIR Systems, IAR-NRC, Presagis and NASA, Alenia and CIRA, Hydra Technologies, DLR, INCAS and other.

Prof. Dr. Jeremy  Laliberte

Lab Operations, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada;Prof. Dr. Laliberté is a Professor and Associate Chair - Aerospace Engineering at Carleton University in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and leads the Advanced Aircraft Design Laboratory. Prior to joining Carleton in 2008, he was a Research Officer at the NRC Aerospace Research Centre from 2001-2008 in the Structures and Materials Performance Laboratory. His research focuses on the design, manufacturing, and testing of advanced aerospace systems, including sustainable aircraft, remotely piloted aircraft systems, and other novel platforms, in collaboration with government and industry partners. From 2019 to 2026, he was Program Director for the multi-university NSERC-CREATE Uninhabited aircraft systems Training, Innovation, and Leadership Initiative (UTILI) with multiple Canadian and International academic, government, and industry partners to train Canadian graduate students in the safe operation of modern drone systems.

Prof. Dr. Youmin  Zhang

Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Aerospace Engineering, Concordia University, Montreal, Canada;Prof. Dr. Youmin Zhang is currently a Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Aerospace Engineering at Concordia University, Canada. His research interests include monitoring, diagnosis, and physical fault/cyber-attack tolerant/resilient control of uncrewed systems and smart grids. These research areas have applications in forest fire management and smart cities within the framework of cyber-physical systems, combining remote sensing and image processing techniques. He has published 12 books and over 800 journal and conference papers, which have been cited up to 38,646 times on Google Scholar with an h-index of 98 and i10-index of 507 currently. His publications have been ranked in Lifetime as #1 Globally in the Specialties of both "Aircraft Systems" and "Fault Tolerance", and #2 Globally in the Specialty of "Unmanned Aerial Vehicle" according to the current rankings by ScholarGPS. He has also been consistently listed in the Stanford’s “World’s Top 2% Scientists” since its first list in 2021 for both "Career" and "Single Year", and is selected as a 2025 "Highly Cited Researcher" by Clarivate. He has been awarded to the “Concordia University Research Award 2025” and “Concordia University’s Research Impact Award (RIA) 2026”. Prof. Zhang is a Fellow of IEEE and CSME and served as the President of the International Society of Intelligent Unmanned Systems from 2019 to 2022. He is currently serving as the International Director (Region 7) of the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS), and a Member of IEEE Fellow Evaluation Committee of IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES). Dr. Douglas Domingues  Bueno

School of Engineering of Ilha Solteira, São Paulo State University (UNESP), São Paulo, Brazil;Dr. Bueno is an associate professor at UNESP, dept. of Mechanical Engineering. He worked with EMBRAER SA as engineer in the Technological Development Department and PSA Peugeot Citroen as product development engineer with experimental tests in prototype vehicles. His research ranges over the topics of aeroelasticity, smart materials, structural dynamics and unsteady aerodynamics. He is focused on creating mathematical and computational models of fluid-structural interaction (aeroelasticity) with applications to aerospace vehicles, including gust alleviation, vibration control and structural health monitoring. Dr. Bueno received his B.Eng. (Hons., first in class) in 2006 and M.Eng. (2007) degrees in mechanical engineering from the FEIS UNESP and a PhD (2014) in aeronautical engineering from the Aeronautics Institute of Technology (ITA), Brazil. He was a visiting researcher at Duke University, EUA (2019), and he received Habilitation (venia legendi) in Control in 2025. Dr. Bueno received the Medal of Honor for Education from the City Hall of Ilha Solteira (São Paulo State, Brazil) in 2022. He has supervised several undergraduate and graduate students in mechanical engineering.

Prof. Dr. Hugo Yañez-Badillo

Departamento de Investigación, Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Tianguistenco (TecNM), Santiago Tianguistenco, Mexico;Dr. Hugo Yáñez-Badillo is a Professor-Researcher at the Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Tianguistenco, TecNM, Mexico. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechatronics and conducts research in robust and intelligent control, dynamic systems, parameter estimation, embedded systems, and unmanned aerial vehicles. His current research interests focus on physical intelligence, particularly the integration of sensing, learning, estimation, and control to develop adaptive and autonomous mechatronic and robotic systems. He is also a collaborator with the LARCASE laboratory at École de Technologie Supérieure (ÉTS), Montreal, Canada. He is currently a Level 1 member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers (SNII).
