Mark Brönstrup, Ph.D. in organic chemistry. From 2005 to 2010, he led the Natural Product Sciences section at Sanofi-Aventis. Since December 2013, he heads the department of Chemical Biology at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research and is a professor at the Leibniz Universität Hannover. His research focuses on novel antibacterial and antiviral drugs. |

Valeria Costantino has been an associate professor of organic chemistry since 2004 with the Department of Pharmacy of UniNA. Her research group focuses on exploring the unique biodiversity of natural products from marine sponges and cyanobacteria as lead compounds for biotechnological applications. More recently, her group has applied their chemical knowledge to explore quorum sensing and the quorum quenching system in bacteria symbiotic with sponges with the goal to design novel leads in antibacterial drug discovery.

Giorgia Oliviero has been an associate professor of organic chemistry since 2016 with the Department of Molecular Medicine and Medical Biotechnologies. Currently, Prof. Dr. Oliviero’s research activity is mainly focused on the synthesis of quadruplex-forming oligonucleotides and peptide nucleic acids to be used as new drugs or as innovative diagnostic tools. Prof. Dr. Oliviero has recently achieved promising results in the direct synthesis of oligonucleotide strands (BIOSENSOR) on porous silica supports (PSi).

Daniele Passarella is an associate professor of organic chemistry at the Università di Milano. His research activity focuses on the organic synthesis of active compounds with particular interest in natural products with the aim of interfering with the biology of cancer and neurodegeneration.

Mattia Mori is senior researcher in medicinal chemistry at the University of Siena (Italy) and has a Ph.D. in structural biology. His research focuses on the computational design and optimization of small molecules of pharmacological relevance, mostly starting from natural products, and in computational studies on macromolecules’ motions.

On Friday 17 July 2020, The International Summer School Of Natural Products, MDPI and Marine Drugs organized a webinar, entitled: “An Approach on Viruses by The International Summer School on Natural Products (ISSNP) 2020”. The webinar provided an introduction to the application of viral technologies for the development of innovative therapeutic approaches.
Prof. Dr. Mark Brönstrup, Department of Chemical Biology, Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, Braunschweig, Germany, held a presentation about “Virus and application of viral technologies for the development of innovative therapeutic approaches.” Prof. Dr. Mark Brönstrup heads the department of Chemical Biology at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research and is a professor at the Leibniz Universität Hannover.
The chairs of the webinar were Prof. Dr. Valeria Costantino, Prof. Dr. Daniele Passarella, Prof. Dr. Oliviero Giorgia, and Dr. Mattia Mori.
The presentation of Prof. Dr. Mark Brönstrup was followed by a discussion and Q&A session. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend. The main focus of the International Summer School on Natural Products (ISSNP) is on both established and emerging areas of research at the cutting-edge of organic chemistry inspired by natural products.
The natural world is a source of biologically active molecules and an inspiration for researchers in different fields. Natural products are bioactive compounds synthesized by terrestrial and marine plants, micro-organisms, and animals. Interdisciplinarity involves the simple combination of several points of view to solve complex problems relating to the characterization of bioactive natural compounds, their biological evaluation, and the clarification of their mechanisms of action.
Accordingly, the aim of this Special Issue of Marine Drugs is to collect new discoveries in relation to bioactive molecules from marine-inspired compounds produced by isolation, semi-synthesis, and synthesis.
The biological activity of natural extracts or synthetic analogues without a proper chemical characterization will not be considered. Review articles in the field will also be evaluated.
The editors strongly encourage young scientists to publish their innovative research in this Special Issue.
