Recent Progress in Electromagnetic Medical Imaging and Sensing

Recently, there has been a growing number of reports regarding electromagnetic medical imaging and sensing systems tested in clinical scenarios. Studies involving hundreds of scans have been reported, demonstrating the potential of this technology. In parallel, the knowledge gained from patient scans has driven technical innovations in hardware and algorithms, as well as practical aspects such as calibration. This webinar is open to all who perform or are interested in this area of research. The webinar speakers will present their cutting-edge findings on microwave stroke monitoring and breast imaging, covering various aspects including algorithms, system prototypes, and feasibility studies with human subjects.

Prof. Dr. Francesca Vipiana

Prof. Dr. Francesca Vipiana

Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, Politecnico di Torino, Torino, Italy;
Francesca Vipiana is a Full Professor of Electromagnetic Fields in the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, Politecnico di Torino, Torino, Italy. Her main research activities concern the modelling, design, implementation, and testing of microwave imaging and sensing systems for medical and industrial applications. Moreover, her research interests include numerical techniques based on integral equations and the method of moments, with a focus on multiresolution and hierarchical schemes, domain decomposition, preconditioning and fast solution methods, advanced quadrature integration schemes, and glide-periodic structures. She received the Lot Shafai Mid-Career Distinguished Award from the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) in 2017, she was an Associate Editor of the journal IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation (2018–2024), and the Founder of the Women in Engineering Column in the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine (2019–2024). She was the Founder and Chair of the EurAAP Women in Antennas and Propagation Working Group (2021–2024), and she is a member of the EurAAP Board of Directors and the Vice-Chair of the IEEE AP-S Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Sense of Belonging Committee.

Prof. Dr. Elise Fear

Prof. Dr. Elise Fear

Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Calgary, Calgary Alberta T2N 1N4, Canada;
Elise Fear is a Professor and the Associate Head of Research in the Department of Electrical and Software Engineering at the University of Calgary. She was the Alberta Innovates Technology Futures iCORE Strategic Chair in Multimodality Imaging and Sensing from 2013 to 2017. Her research interests include microwave imaging and sensing for biomedical applications, including the development of prototype systems and pilot feasibility studies with human subjects. Dr. Fear’s work has been recognized through the Outstanding Paper Award from IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering (2007), the Killam Interdisciplinary Research Prize (2012), the Killam Annual Professorship (2018), the ASTech Award for Innovation in Healthcare (2023), and a Fellowship in the Engineering Institute of Canada (2024). Together with Jeremie Bourqui, Dr. Fear co-founded Wave View Imaging in 2020, a spin-off company aimed at commercializing medical microwave imaging. Wave View Imaging was one of three Canadian companies selected for Pfizer’s Healthcare Hub program in 2023.
