Abstract

Health service providers such as hospitals have their own challenges in keeping their environment safe for the community. Therefore, waste processing units require a capable management system. Apart from medical waste, food waste from nutritional installation also needs to be carried out. Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae which have the ability to transform waste without carrying pathogens and dangerous compounds are a wise choice. Composting is a self-sustaining and cost-effective method that promotes high resource recovery and produces value-added products thereby developing new economic opportunities for hospitals. Here, we reviewed the sustainability design and economic of BSF organics waste processing unit within hospital environments. Through a literature review and some supporting data available at this hospital the author also attempts to evaluate opportunities and future directions regarding this technology. As a result, to fulfil the capacity of ~100 kg per day of food waste, we designed an effective, simple 4x4 m spatial layout. A sales price of IDR 50,000.00 per kg of dried larvae, it will produce a profit within 2 years. The construction of a bioconversion installation with BSF larvae can increase the efficiency of a low-cost food waste management system in hospitals. As well as producing equivalent value to reduce costs, which is suitable for developing country hospitals.
