Abstract

The present study investigates an innovative nanocomposite comprising Ag-doped TiO2 supported on graphite sheets with enhanced photocatalytic properties when subjected to UV-A radiation. Ag-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were produced via a cost-effective sol–gel method, employing polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400) as a reducing agent. A ratio of 1% Ag:Ti was selected. Meanwhile, graphite nano-sheets were fabricated in the laboratory through the chemical treatment of graphite flakes. The synthesis of the Ag/TiO2/graphite nanocomposite involved a combination of the sol–gel method and microwave treatment. The photocatalytic properties of the nanocomposite were assessed using Rhodamine B (Rh B), revealing a photodegradation efficiency of 80% for Rh B within only a 30-minute period. These hybrid structures underwent comprehensive characterization through various techniques, including Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The FTIR and XRD pattern displayed the presence of a highly pure anatase Titanium Dioxide. SEM analysis was conducted to examine the particle size and the morphology of the Ag/TiO2/graphite nanocomposite. STEM images confirmed the presence of graphite layers and well-dispersed Ag/TiO2 within the graphite nano-sheets. This study presents an economical and promising methodology for the development of a novel TiO2-based photocatalyst with significant potential for application as an antiviral coating.
