Abstract

Retinal degenerative diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, are significant causes of permanent vision loss. Recent advancements in tissue engineering have shown promise in developing biomaterial scaffolds to support the growth and integration of retinal cells. This study focuses on designing and developing a novel biomaterial scaffold for retinal tissue engineering and conducting in vitro biomechanical studies to assess its efficacy. The biomaterial scaffold is designed to mimic the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the retina, providing a biocompatible and non-immunogenic environment for the growth of retinal cells. The scaffold is fabricated using a combination of natural and synthetic polymers, ensuring mechanical robustness and high permeability for nutrient exchange. The scaffold's topographical properties and micro/nano-patterned structures are engineered to facilitate the delivery of stem and progenitor cell populations into the sub-retinal space. In vitro, biomechanical studies evaluate the scaffold's performance in supporting cell growth and differentiation. The studies assess the scaffold's ability to maintain cell viability, promote cell adhesion, and facilitate the formation of functional retinal tissue. The results of these studies are expected to provide valuable insights into the potential of the biomaterial scaffold for retinal tissue engineering and its potential applications in treating retinal degenerative diseases. The development of this biomaterial scaffold and the in vitro biomechanical study methods employed in this research aim at advancing the field of ocular tissue engineering and contributing to the development of effective treatments for retinal degenerative diseases. The findings of this study have significant implications for the future of retinal tissue engineering and the potential to restore vision in individuals affected by these debilitating conditions.
