This study investigates the types of waste generated in Happyland, Tondo, Manila, and examines how waste-related activities contribute to community well-being, livelihood, and environmental conditions within the informal settlement. Known for its association with informal waste economies, Happyland presents a unique case where waste functions both as an environmental concern and a source of survival for residents. The research identifies the dominant waste streams in the area, including biodegradable, recyclable, residual, and food waste, and analyzes their impacts on health, economic activity, and the built environment.
Using a mixed-methods case study approach, the study integrates field observations, waste characterization, environmental mapping, household surveys, and semi-structured interviews with residents, waste workers, and local officials. It examines how informal waste management practices shape settlement conditions and influence indicators of community well-being such as public health, livelihood opportunities, environmental quality, and social resilience.
The study argues that community-based and environmentally responsive waste management strategies can improve living conditions while strengthening local resilience. It explores the potential of interventions such as waste segregation systems, material recovery facilities, composting initiatives, and food recovery programs to transform waste into a resource for sustainable community development. Building science principles, including sanitation, ventilation, drainage, and safe waste handling, are considered in evaluating appropriate interventions for high-density settlements.
The findings are expected to demonstrate that improved waste management systems can enhance environmental health, support livelihoods, and promote community well-being in vulnerable urban areas.
