Title: Hematologic Mycoplasma Infection in Four Persian and British Cats: Clinical and Laboratory Findings

Abstract

Introduction: Hematotropic Mycoplasma species are recognized as causative agents of hemolytic anemia and leukocytosis in cats.Objectives: Hematotropic Mycoplasma species are recognized as causative agents of hemolytic anemia and leukocytosis in cats. Clinical signs are often nonspecific, including vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy, which can mimic gastrointestinal disorders or toxin exposure. Early detection through specialized diagnostic tests is critical to optimize therapeutic outcomes. This report describes clinical presentation, laboratory findings, and treatment responses in four cats under a single caretaker.Methods: Four Persian and British cats, aged 2–5 years, were referred for vomiting with hematemesis and diarrhea. Physical examination revealed mild dehydration and pale mucous membranes. Complete blood count with differential (CBC diff) and specialized cytology were performed to identify hematologic parasites. Supportive care included fluid therapy and targeted antibiotic therapy (Choice antibiotic) over 2–3 weeks.Results: CBC revealed leukocytosis (>27,000/µL) and evidence of hemotropic parasites on blood smear, suggestive of Mycoplasma infection. Following supportive therapy and antibiotic treatment, repeated CBC and differential showed normalization of white blood cell counts and absence of hemotropic parasites. Clinical signs resolved completely. Conclusion: Hematotropic Mycoplasma infection should be considered in cats presenting with vomiting, diarrhea, and leukocytosis. Prompt diagnosis using CBC differential and cytology, followed by supportive and antibiotic therapy, leads to favorable outcomes. Early recognition avoids misdiagnosis and enhances treatment efficacy.
