Introduction
Early diagnosis in prehospital emergency care is essential for timely treatment and improved patient outcomes. The use of portable diagnostic tools by emergency medical services (EMS) enhances clinical decision-making in urgent situations. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of prehospital diagnostic tools in emergency care.
Methods
A retrospective observational study was conducted using data from an emergency medical service station in Almaty, Kazakhstan. A total of 120 patients with acute conditions managed by EMS teams were included. Prehospital diagnostic tools assessed included portable electrocardiography (ECG), pulse oximetry, and blood glucose measurement. The study evaluated diagnostic accuracy, time to initial clinical decision-making, and the impact of these tools on prehospital management.
Results
The use of prehospital diagnostic tools significantly improved early identification of critical conditions, including acute coronary syndrome, hypoxia, and metabolic disturbances. Abnormal ECG findings were detected in 30% of patients and contributed to early recognition of cardiac pathology and appropriate triage. Oxygen saturation below 92% was observed in 26% of patients and guided oxygen therapy initiation. Abnormal blood glucose levels were identified in 18% of cases, allowing rapid correction of hypo- and hyperglycemia. The use of these diagnostic tools reduced the time to clinical decision-making by approximately 20% and improved the accuracy of prehospital interventions.
Conclusions
Prehospital diagnostic tools are effective in improving early diagnosis and decision-making in emergency care. Their implementation enhances patient triage and supports timely interventions. Expanding access to point-of-care diagnostics and continuous training of EMS personnel are recommended to improve emergency care outcomes.
