Background:
Maxillary sinus elevation (MSE) is a well-established procedure for augmenting bone height in the posterior maxilla prior to dental implant placement. The success of maxillary sinus elevation depends not only on meticulous surgical technique but also on the health of the maxillary sinus and the patency of the osteomeatal complex. Otolaryngologists play a pivotal role in identifying and managing sinonasal diseases before surgical intervention; however, the extent of their awareness regarding their role in MSE remains unclear. Therefore, comprehensive preoperative assessment of the sinonasal region is essential before undertaking sinus augmentation procedures. This study aimed to assess the awareness, knowledge, and clinical perspectives of otolaryngologists concerning their involvement in maxillary sinus elevation procedures.
Methods:
A cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey was designed and distributed among practicing otolaryngologists. The validated questionnaire comprised sections assessing demographic characteristics, knowledge of maxillary sinus elevation, awareness of indications for ENT consultation, management of sinonasal conditions affecting sinus augmentation. 62 otolaryngologists gave responses which are evaluated by descriptive statistics.
Results:
Among 62 otolaryngologists, the mean age of participants was 49.12 ± 15.16 years. Awareness of sinus lift procedures was generally high, with 47 (75.8%) reporting familiarity and 55 (88.7%) reporting awareness of different sinus lift techniques. Complication-management experience was limited. Collaboration was reported as rare by 30 (48.4%) and 43 (69.4%) felt that communication needed improvement.
Conclusion:
Although numerous studies have investigated the surgical outcomes and complications of maxillary sinus elevation, there is limited evidence regarding otolaryngologists' awareness of their role in the preoperative and postoperative management of these patients. Improving awareness among otolaryngologists regarding their role in maxillary sinus elevation can facilitate early diagnosis and management of sinonasal disorders, reduce postoperative complications, and enhance the long-term success of dental implant therapy.
