Abstract

Background: Denture hygiene is essential in oral health and patient comfort. Despite clinical recommendations, adherence to optimal denture care varies among users.

Objective: To evaluate denture cleaning habits and related hygiene practices among complete denture wearers.

Materials and Methods: A structured questionnaire was administered to 120 complete denture wearers assessing subjectively their daily cleaning routines, methods, storage and maintenance. To access objectively plaque disclosing agent was applied to stain the old dentures and scored based on Denture Cleanliness Index(DCI). The DCI scores were compared with the responses obtained from the questionnaire to evaluate the relationship between reported denture hygiene practices and actual denture cleanliness. Responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA.

Results: DCI scores demonstrated that 12 participants(10.0%) had excellent denture hygiene, 34(28.3%) had good hygiene, 45(37.5%) had fair, and 29(24.2%) had poor hygiene status. The comparison of the DCI score with questionnaire revealed significant findings. Notably, the use of cleaning aids showed a statistically significant difference(P = 0.006), indicating varied effectiveness among cleaning methods. The duration in denture cleanser also demonstrated significance(P = 0.04), suggesting overnight soaking may be beneficial. The years of denture use presented a significant difference(P = 0.0001), indicating longer usage is associated with better satisfaction. Additionally, the polished dentures by a dentist was significant(P = 0.01), implying that professional care may enhance user experience. The use of adhesive revealed a significant difference(P = 0.02), showing its user satisfaction. Finally, the reason for repairs indicated significant finding(P = 0.003), particularly the type of damage.

Conclusion: Denture hygiene practice outcomes are significantly influenced by the type of cleaning aids and methods. Emphasis on patient education regarding evidence-based hygiene practices is recommended to improve prosthesis longevity and oral health.
