The role of health education in improving oral hygiene among the Albanian population

1. Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy, Albanian University, Tirana, 1001, Albania
Abstract

Background: Oral health is an integral component of general health and well-being, influencing nutrition, communication, self-esteem, and quality of life. Despite significant advances in preventive dentistry, oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontal diseases continue to affect a large proportion of the population. Health education is recognized as one of the most effective strategies for promoting positive oral hygiene behaviors, increasing awareness of disease prevention, and encouraging regular use of preventive dental services. Understanding how oral health education is delivered by healthcare professionals can provide valuable insights into improving oral health outcomes within the Albanian population.

Aim: This study aims to evaluate the role of health education in improving oral hygiene among the Albanian population and to assess how oral health education activities are implemented by healthcare professionals.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among healthcare professionals, including dentists, dental hygienists, nurses, and physicians involved in health promotion activities. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess the methods, frequency, and effectiveness of oral health education provided to the population.

Results: The findings indicated that healthcare professionals widely recognized the importance of health education in preventing oral diseases and promoting oral hygiene. Most participants reported providing oral hygiene instructions during routine consultations, particularly regarding proper toothbrushing techniques, the use of fluoride products, dietary recommendations, and the importance of regular dental visits. However, variations were observed in the frequency and consistency of educational interventions. Time constraints, limited educational materials, and insufficient public awareness were identified as common barriers to effective oral health education. Participants emphasized the need for stronger community-based programs and greater institutional support for oral health promotion activities.
