Preventive care and healthy aging: A Study in the Albanian population

1. Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy, Albanian University, Tirana 1001, Albania
Abstract

Introduction: Population aging represents a major public health challenge worldwide. Promoting healthy aging requires an integrated approach in which preventive care plays a crucial role in reducing chronic disease burden, maintaining functional independence, and improving quality of life. In Albania, evidence regarding preventive healthcare utilization and its impact on the health and well-being of older adults remains limited. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the role of preventive care in promoting healthy aging and examine associations between preventive practices, health status, and well-being among older adults in Albania. Methodology: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted among 150 adults aged ≥65 years. Participants voluntarily agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire covering sociodemographic characteristics, chronic diseases, preventive healthcare utilization, physical activity, lifestyle factors. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed to examine associations among the study variables. Results: The findings indicated that preventive healthcare practices varied among older adults. Regular health check-ups and engagement in preventive health behaviors were associated with more favorable health and well-being outcomes. Participants who maintained healthier lifestyles and engaged more actively in preventive practices generally demonstrated better perceived health, greater psychological well-being, and improved functional independence. Physical activity and social support also appeared to play important roles in promoting healthy aging. However, differences in access to preventive healthcare services and the adoption of healthy lifestyle practices were observed among participants, highlighting areas requiring further attention. Conclusions: Preventive care represents a key component of healthy aging and may contribute to improved health and well-being among older adults. Promoting regular health check-ups, physical activity, and preventive interventions may help reduce health risks and maintain functional independence. Strengthening preventive healthcare strategies may support healthier aging among the older population in Albania.
