Abstract

The adverse effects of conventional cancer treatments are driving growing interest in new therapies. Derivatized chalcone emerges as promising anticancer solutions to this deadly disease. Aromatic acetophenone and halogenated benzaldehydes were used to synthesize chloro and bromo chalcone derivatives. The synthetic chalcone analogues have been characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy. The cytotoxicity of halogenated chalcone and the cell cycle analysis were carried out by means of MTT and flow cytometry respectively on MCF-7 and HCT-116 cell lines. The synthesized analogs showed cytotoxicity in selected cancer cell lines. The halogenated chalcogens were found better than the standard chalcone. Analysis of the cell cycle reveals the relative proportion of cells in the various stages of the cell cycle. Synthesized halogenated chalcone analogues show reduced cell viability at the G2 and S phases of the cell cycle.
