Abstract

Industrial decarbonisation and achieving net-zero emission targets make hydrogen as a clean energy for a low-carbon economy. However, producing hydrogen in large-scale needs availability of efficient, cost-effective, energy-saving purification and separation processes. Therefore, the suitable technology, which is membrane-based hydrogen separation is considered as one of the alternatives since its low energy consumption, modular design, continuous operation, and environmental sustainability. This presentation explains an overview of recent advances in membrane producing technologies for sustainable hydrogen separation and their role in clean energy applications. This work discusses membrane separation and hydrogen transport mechanisms, membrane materials’ characterization. This work highlights on advanced membrane synthesis methods such as phase inversion, hollow fibre spinning, electrospinning, interfacial polymerisation, and additive manufacturing through three-dimensional printing, which increase membrane morphology, selectivity, permeability, and long-term operational stability. The combination of membrane with nanotechnology, including metal-organic frameworks, graphene derivatives, carbon nanotubes, and nanofillers, increases permeability-selectivity, improves mechanical strength, and provides antifouling. Furthermore, the presentation also explains on artificial intelligence, digital manufacturing, and process optimisation to design a smart membrane and predict its performance. Moreover, hydrogen can be used for industrial applications, such as hydrogen purification, ammonia production, natural gas processing, refinery operations, fuel cells, and carbon capture systems. Then, current challenges, opportunities, and future research are mentioned to support sustainable hydrogen production and the global clean energy transition
