Abstract:

Rural communities have historically faced various risks and lacked adequate resilience mechanisms. Recently, global approaches have shifted from merely reducing vulnerability to enhancing resilience in plans and policies, with a focus on empowering local communities. Among the significant threats that rural communities encounter is food insecurity arising from multiple factors at macro and micro levels. Within this context, the integration of livelihood resilience and food security emerges as a promising solution, incorporating economic diversification, social support, and sustainable environmental practices to fortify food security and overall well-being in rural regions. This research employs a systematic literature review to investigate how the implementation of a livelihood resilience approach can effectively elevate food security in rural communities. The study aims to review and analyze diverse strategies and initiatives that bolster livelihood resilience in rural areas. In general, the results of more than 70% of the studies reviewed show that adopting a livelihood resilience approach is associated with a significant reduction in the levels of food insecurity. Specifically, the reviewed studies indicate an improvement in average food security in rural areas that have implemented livelihood resilience strategies. By examining the components of livelihood resilience that positively influence food security, this paper sheds light on the potential benefits of adopting such an approach. Furthermore, the study identifies challenges and barriers associated with implementing these strategies, providing recommendations for policymakers, organizations, and community leaders to promote sustainable and resilient food systems in rural communities. By integrating both quantitative evidence and qualitative insights, this research contributes to the understanding of the crucial role of livelihood resilience in enhancing food security outcomes and offers evidence-backed suggestions for effective policy and program design in rural settings.
