Emerging Technologies Toward Agriculture 4.0

Dear Colleagues,

The agricultural sector has a rich history of adopting novel technologies to boost productivity, decrease risk, and improve sustainability. There is a growing trend in the implementation of digital and communication technologies to address issues that are arising due to climate change, growing population, etc.

A particularly important role is played by digital technologies, which are somehow independent by the scale and can be adapted to different environmental conditions, crop, mechanization practices, and needs.

This webinar addresses some important issues in digital agriculture.

The first presentation relates to digital twins, aimed at providing a realistic digital representation of a real agricultural production site, allowing simulation, analysis, planning and eventually improvement in farm management and crop production.

The second presentation provides an insight in artificial intelligence, summarizing the most recent advancements and the new frontiers in IT integration for exploitation of agricultural data.

The third contribution gives an insight on recent trends in agriculture, highlighting how advancement described in the two previous presentations might become a common practice in daily farm management.

We hope these three contributions will stimulate a discussion with attendees, fostering inputs, new insights and collaborations.

Francesco Marinello, Dimitrios Paraforos, Maciej Zaborowicz

On Tuesday 26 July 2022, MDPI and the journal Agriculture held the first webinar in the Agriculture series titled "Emerging Technologies Toward Agriculture 4.0".

The chair for the session was Prof. Dr. Francesco Marinello, of the Department of Land, Environment, Agriculture and Forestry, University of Padova, Padova, Italy. His research interests include Agricultural Mechanics, Precision Farming, Applied Statistics, Sustainable resource-efficient food production and processing and 0nmanned Aerial Vehicles for Agriculture.

The first speaker of the session was Prof. Dr. Dimitrios Paraforos of the Department of Agricultural Engineering, Hochschule Geisenheim University, Geisenheim, Germany. His research interests include agricultural machinery automation, ISOBUS technologies, unmanned ground and aerial vehicles, and decentralized and resilient digital farming systems. His presentation was titled "From Digital Farming to Digital Twins: Dystopia or Utopia?".

Our next speaker was Prof. Dr. Maciej Zaborowicz from the Department of Biosystems Engineering, Poznań University of Life Sciences, Poznań, Poland. His presentation focused on artificial intelligence methods in modern agriculture. His research interests includes data processing and analysis.

The final speaker was our session chair, Prof. Dr. Francesco Marinello, with an insightful presentation titled "10 Years of Evolution: What Is Missing for the Digital Disruption in Agriculture?".

The session was bought to a close by a question time moderated by the chair. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend.
