Dr. Gianni Bellocchi

Grassland Ecosystem Research Unit (UREP), French National Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment (INRAE), France;
With expertise in agro-meteorological and hydro-climatic modelling, he studies the responses of agro-ecosystems to environmental variables and management with the support of simulation models. Focused mainly on modelling carbon and nitrogen cycles in grasslands, his research interests range from sequestration/emission dynamics to the links between plant diversity and biogeochemical processes. He has led several international modelling activities, including the development of ensemble modelling approaches for the simulation of production and biogeochemical variables in grasslands and field crops, while modelling the relationships between species diversity, the functioning of grassland systems and their capacity to provide ecosystem services. He is currently leading modelling tasks in the European Joint Programming on agricultural soil management and sits in the Editorial Boards of Agronomy, Agronomy for Sustainable Development and Atmosphere.

On Wednesday 25th January 2023, MDPI and the Journal Agronomy organized the 5th Webinar on Agronomy entitled “ The Resilience of Grasslands in a Changing World and Their Role in Supporting the Agro-Ecological Transition”. This online seminar was chaired by Dr. Gianni Bellocchi from the Grassland Ecosystem Research Unit (UREP), French National Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment (INRAE), France. He was joined by three leading experts in biogeochemical cycles, sustainable glasslands, and grazing systems. Several environmental and anthropogenic factors can contribute to grassland degradation but, with proper management, a deliberate transformation to more resilient grasslands that provide critical ecosystem services is possible. In order to advance knowledge and implement tangible solutions, the webinar has outlined multifaceted processes of resilience and agro-ecology, articulating different aspects related to grassland research and management (from the fundamental principles of grassland functioning to the territorial dimension), which are of great interest for the future of agriculture.

The presentations were followed by a Q&A and a discussion, moderated by the Chair. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend. The full recording can be found here on the Sciforum website.
