Emerging Technologies and Behavioural Insights for Animal Monitoring, Identification, and Welfare Assessment

Advances in animal monitoring and behavioural assessment are transforming the way researchers and practitioners evaluate animal health, welfare, and management practices. Emerging technologies, including electronic identification systems and data-driven monitoring approaches, are enabling more accurate and continuous observation of animals, while behavioural studies continue to provide essential insights into welfare and social dynamics.

This webinar will present recent developments in both technological and behavioural research. Topics will include the application of UHF RFID technologies for veterinary and animal monitoring purposes, as well as, based on a case study, how social reshuffling influences lying behaviour and welfare in donkeys. By bringing together experts from different disciplines, the event will highlight innovative methodologies and foster discussion on current challenges and future opportunities in animal monitoring and welfare assessment.

Meet Our Speakers

Prof. Alice Buffi

Prof. Alice Buffi

Department Energy, Systems, Territory and Constructions Engineering, University of Pisa, Italy;
Alice Buffi (Senior Member, IEEE) received B.S. and M.S. degrees (summa cum laude) in Telecommunications Engineering and a Ph.D. degree (Doctor Europaeus) in Applied Electromagnetism from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 2006, 2008, and 2012, respectively. Since 2012, she has been with the University of Pisa, where she is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Energy, Systems, Territory and Construction Engineering. She has co-authored numerous international journal and conference publications, as well as a European patent and a European patent application. Her research focuses on measurement methods for locating static or moving objects, assets, and people using UHF RFID systems for Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0 applications, safety, and smart agriculture. Additional interests include classification methods for smart gates and storage systems, battery ageing, wireless power transfer, and electromagnetic compatibility. Dr. Buffi has received several distinctions, including the Best Paper Award at IEEE RFID-TA 2019, Best Poster Awards at IEEE M&N 2022 and IEEE RFID 2023, the URSI Commission B Young Scientist Award in 2013 and 2016, and the 2022 IEEE Open Journal of Instrumentation and Measurement Outstanding Reviewer Award. She serves as Vice President of Publications for the IEEE Council on RFID (2024–2027), Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement and the IEEE Journal of Radio Frequency Identification, Chair of the Steering Committee of the IEEE Journal of RFID, and Chair of the IEEE CRFID Technical Committee on Motion Capture and Localization (TC-MoCap). She is also a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Council on RFID (2023–2027).

Dr. Elie Atallah

Dipartimento di Medicina Veterinaria e Scienze Animali, Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy;
Dr. Atallah is a veterinarian and postdoctoral research fellow. His research interests include animal behaviour, welfare assessment and the use of Precision Livestock Farming technologies to monitor animals and support evidence-based welfare evaluation.
