7th Animals Webinar

Sensing Technologies for Precision Livestock Farming and Mitigation of Conflicts with Predators

Measurement technologies and artificial intelligence are increasingly reshaping how we monitor animals and manage their interaction with human activities. In this webinar, we will explore two complementary perspectives. First, Prof. Thiago Meireles Paixão will present label-efficient computer vision methods for precision pig farming, showing how synthetic data, foundation models, and active learning can reduce the annotation effort needed for automated animal monitoring. Then, Dr. Leonardo Martin will introduce the development and field testing of a non-lethal deterrence system aimed at mitigating wolf–livestock conflict.

Date: November 5th, 2026

Dr. Giacomo Peruzzi

Department of Information Engineering, University of Padova, Padua, Italy;Giacomo Peruzzi received the B.Sc. degree in information engineering, the M.Sc. degree in computer and automation engineering, and the Ph.D. degree in information engineering and science from the University of Siena, Siena, Italy, in 2016, 2019, and 2023, respectively. He is currently a Research Fellow with the Department of Information Engineering, University of Padova, Padua, Italy. His current research interests include fields of the Internet of Things (IoT) and distributed measurement systems. In particular, he deals with wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for monitoring systems that are enabled by low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) technologies, as well as virtual and augmented sensing techniques, and embedded machine learning (ML) for measurement infrastructures. He is currently a Section Board Member of MDPI Sensors, and he was recipient of the awards MDPI Sensors Outstanding Reviewer for 2024, and MDPI Sensors Best Paper Award for 2025.
